Bihar’s Fish Are Swimming to New Markets: Major Expansion Plan for Fish Exports

Bihar’s Fishery Industry: A Game Changer in Fish Exports

The Bihar Fisheries Department is making waves as it embarks on an ambitious plan to send locally produced fish to other states in India. After years of importing fish from neighboring states, Bihar is now poised to make a mark in the fish export market, opening doors to new opportunities for both farmers and businesses alike.

Under the Chief Minister’s Fish Marketing Scheme, the state has selected 13 districts where locally produced fish will be sent to other states. This includes major fish-producing regions like Jamui and Kishanganj in Eastern Bihar, and a slew of districts like Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Vaishali, Begusarai, Saran, Sheikhpura, Buxar, Gopalganj, Arwal, and Bettiah. This first phase of the project marks a significant step forward for Bihar’s fishery sector, as it aims to cater to the increasing demand in other states.

A Step Towards Organized Fish Marketing

In the past, Bihar’s fish markets have been largely disorganized. The fish business here has primarily been traditional, with most retail sales happening in open-air markets under unhygienic conditions. This has posed challenges for the fish industry to meet growing demands, both within the state and beyond. Now, with the state government’s intervention, the plan is to modernize fish farming techniques, improve infrastructure, and establish organized fish markets to ensure hygienic and streamlined fish sales.

A significant portion of Bihar’s fish exports will include unique varieties like the Pirohia fish from Bhagalpur and the Baigania fish from Sitamarhi, which have seen a surge in demand, especially in the northeastern states. While there have been small-scale exports of these fish through private traders, the government’s involvement will bring a more structured and efficient approach to marketing these fish.

Supporting Growth with Agricultural Roadmap

The Bihar government’s vision to expand fish production is part of its broader agricultural roadmap, aimed at enhancing development in agriculture and allied sectors. Over the past few decades, Bihar’s fish production has grown threefold, thanks to a robust strategy for increasing fish productivity. This growth has led to an increased need for better fish markets, supporting infrastructure, and the development of a hygienic and sustainable fish marketing system.

With this ambitious move, Bihar’s fish industry is poised to take a major leap in both production and sales, bringing new employment opportunities, increasing farmers’ incomes, and placing Bihar’s fish at the forefront of India’s fish export market.

The Fisheries Department’s plan aligns with the state government’s aim to make Bihar self-sufficient in fish production, creating long-term economic benefits for the entire state. By reaching markets in other states, Bihar will not only generate new revenue streams but also provide high-quality fish for a larger audience.
