Transforming Bihar’s Ganga: CNG Boats to Replace Diesel, Floating Fuel Stations Coming Soon

What if the Ganga River in Bihar could be a symbol of clean, green progress? That dream is turning into reality.

Bihar is taking bold steps to reduce pollution in the 448 km stretch of the Ganga that flows through the state. Inspired by Varanasi’s air pollution control model, all diesel-powered boats and cruises will soon switch to CNG engines. This initiative will not only protect the river but also improve the air quality across the region.

Why Diesel is a Problem

Diesel engines are a major source of harmful emissions. According to research, burning one liter of diesel releases 2.6391 kg of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). In addition, toxic substances like DPM, SO₂, NOₓ, and hydrocarbons severely harm the environment.

Now, imagine this: over 1,000 boats and cruises in Bihar’s Ganga burn diesel daily. A single boat burning 40 liters of diesel emits over 105 kg of CO into the air each day. The impact on air quality and aquatic life is devastating.

The Green Solution: CNG Boats and Floating Fuel Stations

The Bihar government plans to phase out diesel-powered boats and replace them with CNG engines. This eco-friendly shift will reduce toxic emissions and improve the river’s ecosystem.

Here’s what’s planned:

  • Drone Surveys: Drones will scan the Ganga for all boats, including unauthorized ones, to create a complete inventory.
  • CNG Conversion: Both small boats and large cruises will transition to CNG engines.
  • Floating CNG Stations: To support this shift, floating fuel stations will be set up at key locations like Patna, Bhagalpur, and Buxar. These mobile stations will ensure continuous supply and can relocate if needed.

Environmental Minister Dr. Prem Kumar shared his commitment: “The Ganga will soon be free from diesel pollution. This move is a big step towards sustainable river transport.”

Why CNG is the Future

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a cleaner fuel compared to diesel. It produces minimal carbon emissions, reducing air and water pollution. Boats running on CNG will help protect aquatic life and create a healthier environment for communities living along the river.

Take Action: Be Part of the Change

Bihar’s initiative to green the Ganga is not just a government project—it’s a call for collective action. The transformation will begin soon, and you can stay updated every step of the way.
