Sonpur Mela, one of Bihar’s most vibrant fairs, is set for a major upgrade. The government has approved a new RCC bridge on the Chapra-Sonpur route. This bridge will ensure smoother travel and better crowd management during the mela. It will cost nearly ₹11 crore. Importantly, it will reduce traffic congestion on the existing Gandak bridge. Thousands of locals and visitors will benefit from improved connectivity.
Recently, Bihar’s finance department approved the bridge construction in the Harihar region of the Sonpur Mela area. The estimated cost is ₹10.99 crore. Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited, Patna, will handle the project. They bring the needed expertise for timely completion.
District Public Relations Officer Ravindra Kumar stated the bridge will be 5 by 16.5 meters in size. It will be built near Nazarmiara, at the fifth kilometer mark. This new bridge will replace the old and worn-out structure. The current bridge often fails to meet traffic demands.
At present, the old bridge is in poor condition and often unusable. Therefore, locals face daily inconveniences. Once ready, the new bridge will ease movement for many villages. These include Nazarmiara Panchayat, Rahar Dear, Pahleja, Chitar Chak, Babarbani, Shahpur, Jahangirpur, Govind Chak, and Sabalpur.
Furthermore, the bridge will connect key roads such as Paramanandpur, JP Pul, and Baba Harihar Nath Road. This will improve regional travel greatly. For Sonpur Mela visitors, traffic on the main mela route is often heavy. The new bridge will help reduce load on Gandak Bridge and Gandhi Ghat areas.
Saran’s Public Relations Officer, Ravindra Kumar, expressed confidence in the project. He said this bridge will speed up development in Sonpur Mela. The ₹11 crore investment will benefit common people and the region alike.
Additionally, Sonpur’s recent promotion from Nagar Panchayat to Nagar Parishad shows growth. The city’s urban boundaries are also expanding. This bridge project is another step toward modernizing Sonpur.
