How a small village in Nalanda became the epicentre of pride, progress, and possibilities.
For the weavers of Nepura, a village tucked away in Nalanda district of Bihar, July 28 wasn’t just another Sunday. It was the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his popular radio program Mann Ki Baat, praised local weaver Naveen Kumar for embracing tradition while innovating with technology.
The recognition struck a deep chord. Children cheered, women smiled, and elders teared up. “This moment isn’t just about me,” Naveen said. “It’s about every weaver who stayed committed to the loom.”
The impact of PM Modi’s words was immediate. Families in Nepura replayed the radio broadcast with pride. Streets lit up with smiles and celebration.
Until now, many weavers felt invisible in national conversations. However, this public praise changed that in an instant. “We finally feel seen,” said one elder. “It gives us strength to continue and innovate.”
Naveen Kumar, who also leads the Nepura Primary Weavers Cooperative Committee, is not only carrying forward his family tradition—he’s upgrading it.
Earlier, artisans worked on pit looms, which required them to sit in sunken pits. Thanks to the Ministry of Textiles, they now use modern frame looms, which are easier to operate and can be installed on rooftops. This upgrade has increased both comfort and productivity.
Importantly, it has inspired younger generations. Many now study handloom technology and work with leading fashion brands. Several students from weaving families have even secured seats at NIFT, under the special weaver quota—another highlight mentioned by PM Modi.
The enthusiasm in Nepura is not just about recognition. It’s about renewed confidence.
“Our youth used to hesitate before taking up weaving,” said Naveen. “Now they see it as a dignified, innovative career.”
More families are investing in tools and skills. Young artisans are also exploring design trends, customer preferences, and social media marketing to make their work visible. Clearly, the mindset is shifting from survival to growth.
Nepura’s transformation shows what happens when heritage meets opportunity. With the right push, communities can grow, innovate, and even inspire the nation.
“PM Modi’s words brought us into the light,” Naveen shared. “We’ve always had the talent. Now, we feel we have the nation’s support.”
This spirit defines the new Bihar—resilient, rooted, and ready to rise.
