Air India Takes Off from Gaya Again: A Game Changer for Bihar’s Connectivity

Gaya’s skies are open once more. After a long five-year pause, Air India has announced the resumption of direct flights from Gaya International Airport to Delhi, starting September 1, 2025. This long-awaited move is expected to bring relief not just to local passengers but also to thousands of international tourists heading to Bodhgaya.

Importantly, ticket bookings have already started, with economy class priced at ₹7122 and business class at ₹25,000.

A Boost for Travel, Tourism, and Trade

The significance of this move goes far beyond convenience. It directly impacts tourism, education, business, and the local economy.

Until now, Gaya had to rely solely on IndiGo flights. That limited both schedules and options for passengers. With Air India back, a much-needed second option has opened up.

For international tourists, especially those visiting Bodhgaya via Delhi, this service is invaluable. Not only does it reduce transit stress, but it also improves accessibility for pilgrimage circuits and global Buddhist tourism.

Meanwhile, local entrepreneurs and students who frequently travel to the national capital now have another dependable option. Many have expressed relief, saying this move will save time, offer flexible timing, and improve travel experiences.

Why Gaya Needs More Than Just One Route

Following the announcement, excitement has turned into growing demand. Locals are now urging Air India to start direct flights to Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru as well.

According to Sandeep Kumar, President of the Tour & Travels Association, booking inquiries began the moment the news went live. He believes that adding more routes could significantly boost both domestic and international tourism.

Notably, Gaya is more than a spiritual destination. It is a business hub, an academic center, and a transit point for travelers across eastern India. Increased air connectivity would uplift multiple sectors in the region.

Reviving Gaya Airport’s Role in Regional Development

Back in 2021, Air India suspended operations from Gaya due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For years since then, flyers have requested its return. With the restart now confirmed, the utility of Gaya International Airport is set to grow.

Air India has already issued flight schedules and partnered with tour operators to make the transition smooth. This step will also likely increase overall passenger traffic, prompting more upgrades and investment in the airport’s infrastructure.

The state government and travel industry insiders now view this as a stepping stone toward making Gaya a major aviation hub in Bihar.
