₹4 Lakh Aid for Delivery Workers’ Families: Bihar’s Landmark Step to Protect Gig Workers”
Every time a delivery partner speeds through traffic, they’re not just racing against time—they’re risking their life for our convenience. In a historic move, Bihar has taken a people-first step to support gig workers like delivery boys, riders, and temporary laborers by passing the Platform-Based Workers’ Welfare Bill 2025. This isn’t just policy—it’s a message that every life matters, even when it’s on two wheels.
The bill passed in the monsoon session of the Bihar Assembly promises direct financial aid to gig workers and their families.
Here’s what it brings to the table:
₹4 lakh aid in case of accidental death
₹2 lakh for natural death
Disability support ranging from ₹74,000 to ₹2.5 lakh for 40-60% disability
Hospitalisation aid of ₹5,400 (under 1 week) and ₹16,000 (more than 1 week)
Maternity benefit for women gig workers
Unique ID for every registered gig worker to access welfare schemes
Moreover, the government has mandated all platform companies and aggregators to register their gig workforce within 60 days. This will ensure they’re brought under the safety net.
To ensure implementation, a Welfare Board will be formed. It will be chaired by the Labour Resource Department Minister and include platform company representatives. This board will address grievances, release aid, and monitor worker safety.
Gig workers will now hold a government-recognised identity and can directly benefit from official schemes—something that was unthinkable just a few years ago.
Another key development: the state has amended the Factories Act 1948, increasing the overtime cap from 75 to 144 hours per quarter. However, written consent from workers is now mandatory. This allows workers to earn more without being exploited.
While the focus remained on gig workers, the Bihar Assembly also passed bills that will impact various sectors:
Karpoori Thakur Skill University Bill 2025: Bihar’s first dedicated skill university
Bihar Shops & Establishment Amendment Bill 2025: Reforms for working conditions
Animal Breeding Regulation Bill 2025: Stronger rules in livestock sector
Bihar Agricultural University Amendment Bill 2025: Recruitments now through BPSC, BTSC, BSSC
Each bill aims to streamline processes, strengthen governance, and boost employment opportunities.
India’s gig economy is booming, but its backbone—the workers—are often invisible, unprotected, and unaccounted for. With this bill, Bihar becomes one of the first Indian states to formally recognise their rights and risks.
And while we aren’t naming political figures, this is a people-first move that deserves attention beyond party lines.
