Bihar Steps Into the Big League of Indian Athletics

“Bihar ke dil mein ab sirf sapne nahi, daudte hain champions!”
For the first time in history, Patna is set to host the prestigious Indian Open Athletics Meet on July 19 — a monumental moment for Bihar’s sporting journey.

More than 250 elite athletes, both men and women, from across the nation will compete at the Patliputra Sports Complex. Representing top institutions like ONGC and Indian Railways, these athletes aren’t just chasing medals—they’re chasing spots in the upcoming Asian and Commonwealth Games.

This is not just a sporting event—it’s Bihar announcing itself on the national athletics map.

What to Expect at the Meet?

The championship, organised by the Athletics Association of Bihar under the umbrella of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), will feature a wide array of track and field events:

  • Sprints & Relays (100m to 4x400m)

  • Long & Middle-Distance Runs

  • Steeplechase, Marathon, and Half Marathon

  • High-Intensity Jumps like Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, and Pole Vault

  • Power Events including Shot Put, Discus Throw, Javelin, Hammer Throw

  • And multi-discipline events like the Decathlon and Heptathlon

Every stride, jump, and throw will count — not just for medals, but as a ticket to international games.

Bihar’s Sports Authority Sounds the Bugle

According to Ravindran Shankar (IPS), DG of Bihar State Sports Authority, this championship will act as a qualifier for selecting athletes for prestigious international events like the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.

This isn’t just good news for athletes—it’s a game-changer for sports lovers, budding talents, and youth from Bihar.
This is the first step towards building Bihar as a national sports hub.

Powerlifting Glory: Patna Boy Lifts Bihar’s Name in Japan

In another proud moment for Bihar, Amit Kishan of Patna clinched Gold in the Asian-African Pacific Powerlifting and Bench Press Championship in Japan.

He made headlines by lifting 182.5kg in the 120+kg weight category bench press, proving that Bihar’s strength is felt globally. Earlier this year, he had secured a silver medal at the Senior National Championship in Punjab.

Amit’s story reflects the rise of new icons from Bihar who are making India proud on the world stage.

Why This Matters

Patna’s inclusion in the Indian athletics calendar is not a small win—it’s a massive milestone. It signifies Bihar’s growing stature in the world of sports infrastructure, event management, and athlete development.

Moreover, events like these inspire a new generation of runners, jumpers, lifters, and dreamers from every corner of Bihar.
