Discover the inspiring journey of Akash Deep, a small-town cricketer from Bihar, who overcame personal struggles, societal expectations, and life’s setbacks to achieve his cricketing dreams. Read how passion, resilience, and dedication led him to India’s Test team debut
In the heart of Bihar’s Sasaram, where cricket was hardly seen as a career, Akash Deep found joy, passion, and purpose in the game. Playing cricket was not just a sport for him but a pathway to happiness—a happiness that came despite obstacles and societal expectations. Today, as he takes his first steps in India’s Test cricket arena, his journey from the lanes of Sasaram to the international stage is a testament to resilience and dedication.
Early Life and Love for Cricket: Against All Odds
Born in Dehri in Bihar’s Rohtas district, Akash Deep grew up in Sasaram, where cricket was less about future glory and more about pure joy. But while he found fulfillment in cricket, his father, Ramji Singh, envisioned a more conventional path for his son. As a government schoolteacher, Ramji urged Akash to prioritize academics and work towards a stable government job. Yet Akash’s heart remained set on the pitch, even as his father and others in the community questioned his choices.
Despite societal disapproval, Akash’s love for cricket only grew stronger. Many local parents discouraged their children from associating with him, fearful that they, too, might follow in his footsteps, putting passion above academics. Akash stood alone in his commitment to the sport, undeterred by the doubts surrounding him.
Tragic Setbacks and Family Responsibilities
Just as his cricket dreams began taking shape, tragedy struck. Akash lost both his father and elder brother unexpectedly, and the responsibility of supporting his family fell heavily on his shoulders. With two sisters and his grieving mother to care for, Akash was forced to step away from the game he loved for three long years.
During this challenging time, Akash devoted himself to rebuilding his life and supporting his family, but the cricket dream remained alive within him. Eventually, he made the difficult decision to leave home, heading first to Durgapur and later to Kolkata, where he rented a small room with his cousin. In Durgapur, a close friend helped him secure a spot in a cricket club, allowing him to manage his daily expenses.
The Journey Back to Cricket
To support himself, Akash began playing local tennis-ball cricket matches, where he earned around ₹6,000 a day and close to ₹20,000 per month. Although these were far from the glitzy stadiums of international cricket, they gave him a way to survive and stay connected to the game. His dedication soon caught the attention of selectors, and he was invited to join the Bengal Under-23 team.
His break in domestic cricket soon arrived, and he debuted in the prestigious Ranji Trophy, representing Bengal. His impressive performances led to further recognition, and he soon found a place with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
International Recognition and Challenges
Akash’s talent earned him recognition on the national stage. In 2022, he was called up to replace the injured Shivam Mavi for the Asian Games squad. A year later, he was selected for India’s One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa as a replacement for Deepak Chahar. Although he did not get a chance to play in the ODI series, his steady progress was undeniable.
A Dream Realized: Test Debut for India
Today, Akash Deep fulfills a lifelong dream as he debuts in India’s Test match series against England in Ranchi, watched by his proud mother. He received the news of his Test call-up while representing Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, symbolizing a dream fulfilled through perseverance and resilience.
His journey—from facing societal skepticism and personal tragedies to standing on the international stage—is an inspiration for every aspiring athlete who faces opposition and adversity.
