Bihar to Predict Rain Before It Falls – Tech That Changes Everything!

What if you could check your phone and know the exact rainfall forecast—hours before the clouds even roll in? That future is no longer far-fetched. It’s happening right here in Bihar.

The Patna Meteorological Centre is stepping into the future with the installation of a Radiometer, a powerful instrument that reads the temperature and moisture in the air with high accuracy. According to Ashish Kumar, Director of the Weather Centre, this device will revolutionize how we predict rainfall.

🔬 What’s a Radiometer & Why It’s a Game-Changer

Until now, Bihar’s weather updates relied entirely on satellite images. However, satellite data often lacks precision at ground level. That’s where the Radiometer steps in.

This instrument directly monitors:

  • Temperature variations in the air,

  • Moisture levels that influence cloud formation,

  • And the density of rainfall—before it even begins.

As a result, we’ll now get region-specific forecasts—from heavy downpours in one area to scattered drizzles in another. Even better, the device will help predict how cloud patterns and winds shift rainfall from one location to another.

But That’s Not All: Lightning Forecast Is Next

In collaboration with the India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Bihar is also setting up lightning sensors.

These will be placed in:

  • Bhagalpur

  • East Champaran

  • Darbhanga

Each sensor will cover a radius of 500 kilometers, alerting us to possible lightning strikes well in advance. Currently, a lightning sensor is already functioning in Gaya, and this expansion will cover much of the state—making Bihar safer and more prepared.

What This Means for Bihar’s Future

This isn’t just about knowing when to carry an umbrella.

For farmers, this means timely planning of crops.
For local governments, this ensures quicker disaster response.
And for all of us—it brings peace of mind.

The Radiometer will be up and running in three months, but the impact it promises is long-term. It marks a massive leap toward smarter weather forecasting and climate resilience.
