Bihar Clears ₹1,302 Crore Sonepur International Airport with 4.2 km Runway — Airbus A380 to Land by 2030

Historic Approval: A New Sky Opens for Bihar

History was written in one decisive cabinet meeting.

The government of Bihar has approved a massive international airport at Sonepur. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar led the landmark decision. As a result, north Bihar now moves toward a new era of global connectivity.

The proposed Sonepur International Airport will feature a 4.2 km runway. Notably, this runway can handle wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380. Consequently, Bihar will gain the capacity for direct long-haul international flights.

Spread across 4,228 acres between Hajipur and Dumaria, the project carries a ₹1,302 crore land acquisition allocation. Moreover, the state aims to complete the airport by 2030. Therefore, this project stands as one of the most ambitious infrastructure moves in Bihar’s history.

Sonepur International Airport: Key Highlights

First and foremost, this will be the largest airport in Bihar by land area. In fact, it will rank among the biggest in India in terms of acreage.

Here are the core features:

  • 📍 Location: Sonepur, Saran district

  • 📏 Runway Length: 4,200 metres

  • 🌍 Aircraft Capacity: Including Airbus A380

  • 🗺️ Total Area: 4,228 acres

  • 💰 Land Acquisition Budget: ₹1,302 crore

  • 🎯 Target Completion: 2030

Additionally, the Union Civil Aviation Ministry has granted site clearance. The proposal even found mention in the Union Budget. Therefore, the project enjoys both state and central backing.

Why the 4.2 km Runway Changes Everything

A 4,200-metre runway is not ordinary. Instead, it signals global ambition.

Longer runways allow aircraft to operate at full load capacity. Consequently, airlines can carry more passengers and cargo on long-haul routes. This directly improves international connectivity.

More importantly, Bihar will no longer depend entirely on connecting hubs. Direct global routes can boost tourism, trade, and investment. Furthermore, longer runways enhance operational safety during challenging weather conditions.

Thus, the Sonepur airport runway is not just infrastructure. It is strategic infrastructure.

Transforming North Bihar’s Aviation Landscape

Currently, Bihar operates several airports:

  • Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport

  • Gaya Airport

  • Darbhanga Airport

  • Purnia Airport

Another airport is under development at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district.

However, Patna airport faces congestion and expansion challenges. Therefore, the Sonepur International Airport will ease pressure on Patna. At the same time, it will ensure balanced aviation growth in north Bihar.

As connectivity improves, regional inequality in infrastructure will gradually decline. In turn, districts like Saran and Hajipur will experience accelerated development.

Economic and Strategic Impact: Beyond Flights

Infrastructure drives economies. This airport will do exactly that.

During construction, thousands of jobs will emerge. Later, operational phases will create long-term employment. Moreover, sectors such as agriculture exports, manufacturing, and logistics will gain direct access to global markets.

With improved cargo handling facilities, local producers can expand internationally. Consequently, Saran, Hajipur, and surrounding districts may attract new investments.

In addition, large-scale projects stimulate real estate and hospitality sectors. Hotels, transport services, and commercial hubs usually grow around major airports. Therefore, this airport can act as an economic engine for north Bihar.

Other Major Cabinet Decisions

The same cabinet meeting approved 35 additional proposals. Therefore, the airport decision formed part of a broader governance push.

Notably, the cabinet sanctioned ₹70 crore for anti-erosion work between Ismailpur and Bindtoli in Bhagalpur district. This move will strengthen embankments damaged during last year’s floods. As a result, vulnerable regions will gain improved flood protection.

Bihar’s Global Leap: A Defining Infrastructure Moment

The Bihar new airport 2026 approval marks more than a project announcement. Instead, it represents confidence. It represents ambition. Most importantly, it represents a shift in narrative.

For decades, migration defined Bihar’s story. Now, connectivity and global integration define its future.

As 2030 approaches, the vision becomes clearer. Wide-body aircraft landing in Sonepur will symbolize a transformed Bihar. Therefore, this airport stands not just as concrete and asphalt, but as aspiration taking flight.
