Bihar Declared Naxal-Free: Last Armed Maoist Surrenders in Munger, Marking Historic Shift
In a landmark development, Bihar has officially been declared free of Naxal activities. The milestone came after the surrender of the last armed Maoist, Suresh Koda, in Munger. With this, the state closes a long and painful chapter of insurgency.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Munger range, Rakesh Kumar, confirmed the breakthrough. He stated clearly that no armed Naxalite squad is currently active in any of the 23 districts once affected by extremism.
For a state that once witnessed deep unrest, this moment signals transformation.
Back in 2012, twenty-three districts in Bihar struggled with Naxal influence. However, the roots of the movement go even deeper. During the 1970s, central Bihar districts became strongholds of Naxalite activity. As a result, development slowed and fear dominated rural life.
Yet, sustained action changed the narrative. Both the Central and State Governments intensified security operations. At the same time, authorities focused on rehabilitation and development.
The results now speak loudly. In 2025, not a single Naxalite incident was reported in Bihar. Moreover, security forces arrested 220 Naxalites during the year. Therefore, the surrender of Suresh Koda marks not just an individual decision, but a symbolic end to armed insurgency in the state.
Importantly, this shift did not rely on force alone. The government encouraged surrender through structured rehabilitation policies.
The District Magistrate of Munger, Nikhil Dhanraj Nippanikar, stated that Suresh Koda will receive benefits under the Central Government’s surrender and rehabilitation scheme. These benefits aim to reintegrate former extremists into mainstream society.
Meanwhile, Suresh Koda’s wife, Pramila Devi, shared her relief and happiness. According to her, the family finally feels peace. That emotional response reflects the deeper human impact of this transition.
Because when violence ends, families heal first.
This declaration reshapes Bihar’s identity. For decades, the word “Naxal-affected” followed several districts. Now, that tag fades away.
Peace strengthens investment. Stability boosts infrastructure growth. Confidence improves education and employment opportunities. Consequently, rural Bihar can now focus fully on development.
Moreover, the absence of violence creates space for governance reforms and grassroots empowerment. Security forces remain vigilant. However, the emphasis has clearly shifted toward progress.
Bihar’s journey from insurgency to stability sends a strong national message. It proves that coordinated security efforts, rehabilitation policies, and community participation can change history.
