Bihar’s Big Drive: 2,000 Women to Power the Pink Bus Fleet by August 2025!

What if public transport wasn’t just a way to commute, but a vehicle for change? Bihar is proving it can be. In a transformative step toward gender equality and safe mobility, the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) is set to train 2,000 women drivers to operate a fleet of 80 pink buses by August 2025.

These women won’t just be driving buses. They’ll be driving change.

Inside the Training Plan: Phased, Powerful, Practical

To roll this out efficiently, BSRTC has divided the training into three structured phases. Each round will include:

• 500 women trained over 30 days

• Applicants must have a valid LMV (Light Motor Vehicle) licence

• Only those who demonstrate proper bus-handling skills will receive certification

Moreover, these training centers must meet strict safety and hygiene standards. BSRTC has mandated the presence of:

• Clean, separate toilets

• Safe drinking water access

• High boundary walls for security

Clearly, the state wants women to train not just with competence—but also with confidence.

Arrival of Pink Buses: More Than Just a Fleet

According to BSRTC Administrator Atul Kumar Verma, 80 pink buses are expected to arrive in Bihar by August-end. These will be exclusively driven by women who complete the training.

In addition, the Transport Department is preparing a residential training framework. To streamline execution, it is working closely with motor vehicle training centers to ensure a standard learning experience across districts.

Special Duty Officer Aruna Kumari is actively leading the coordination between training providers and the department, ensuring that timelines and quality are both met.

Districts Already Onboard

This isn’t a pilot project in just a few locations. It’s already spanning across districts. Training centers from these regions are participating:

• Purnia

• Aurangabad

• Lakhisarai

• Munger

• Banka

• Gopalganj

• Darbhanga

• Siwan

As more districts join, the outreach and impact of this initiative are set to expand even further.

Let’s be clear—this isn’t just about giving jobs to women. It’s about breaking old narratives and creating visible representation in public spaces. A woman behind the wheel sends a strong message that gender roles are shifting in Bihar.

Furthermore, this initiative supports financial independence and promotes safety in public transport. Women passengers often feel unsafe during commutes. With more women drivers, the state addresses both supply-side employment and demand-side safety.
