From Practice Fields to Podiums: Sunny Kumar’s Silver Shines for Bihar

“जहां ज़मीन छूती है हौसलों की ऊंचाई, वहीं से शुरू होती है बिहार की कहानी!”
At the Indian Open Athletics Meet in Bengaluru, Bihar’s Sunny Kumar made headlines by winning the silver medal in the men’s long jump. He secured second place with a jump of 7.90 meters, missing the gold by just three centimeters. The top position went to Muhammed Anees Yahiya, who managed 7.93 meters, while David P settled for bronze.

The event was held at the Kanteerava Stadium, and Sunny’s performance stood out among the nation’s best jumpers. His hard work and progress over the past few years have now placed him among India’s rising track and field athletes.

A Journey Marked by Grit and Growth

Earlier this year, Sunny had already proven his potential. He earned gold at the 4th Indian Open Jumps Competition at the Anju Bobby High Performance Centre with a leap of 7.80 meters. Since then, he has continued to train in Thiruvananthapuram, improving his technique and strength.

This consistent performance is the result of long-term dedication. According to Raveendran Sankaran, Director General and CEO of the Bihar State Sports Authority (BSSA),

“Sunny’s medal is the result of three years of focused effort. His journey is an inspiration not just for Bihar, but for athletes across India.”

Each of Sunny’s six jumps on the final day tells a story of resilience:

  • First: 7.70 meters

  • Second: 7.90 meters (his best)

  • Third: Foul

  • Fourth: 7.87 meters

  • Fifth: 5.14 meters

  • Sixth: No improvement

Although he didn’t beat Anees—an international athlete who has competed in the Commonwealth Games and World Athletics Championships—Sunny showed he belongs in elite competition.

A New Chapter for Bihar’s Sporting Dreams

Sunny Kumar’s silver isn’t just a personal victory. It represents a bigger moment for sports in Bihar. His progress shows what’s possible with proper training, guidance, and institutional support.

In fact, Bihar is slowly building its presence in national athletics. With facilities like the Anju Bobby High Performance Centre and guidance from bodies like BSSA, young athletes now have platforms to perform and grow.

What makes Sunny’s story even more powerful is that it started far from the spotlight. His rise proves that talent from smaller towns can compete at the highest level. As more athletes follow his path, Bihar’s name will appear more often on the national stage.
