India’s para-athletes roared on the global stage at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Now, Bihar is ready to rewrite its sports legacy—this time, through inclusion, ambition, and action.
In a landmark announcement, the Bihar State Government has revealed plans to establish the region’s first-ever Residential Sports School for Para-Athletes, under the Mukhyamantri Khel Vikas Mahatvkanshi Yojana. The facility will function within the Eklavya Schools framework, redefining how Bihar nurtures sporting excellence.
India’s Paralympians made history in Paris, bagging a record 29 medals — 7 Gold, 9 Silver, and 13 Bronze. But beyond the podiums, their victories screamed of something deeper — resilience, representation, and the urgent need for systemic support.
Sharad Kumar, from Muzaffarpur, clinched Silver in the men’s high jump T63.
Pramod Bhagat, from Vaishali, had earlier won Gold in men’s SL3 Badminton at Tokyo 2020.
And Soman Rana, though born in Shillong, trained in Bihar and became a national shot put champion in 2025.
Clearly, Bihar has the talent. What it needed was vision. Now, it has both.
This isn’t just another sports facility. According to the Bihar State Sports Authority, this Residential Para Sports School will:
Identify emerging para-athlete talent from across Bihar and India.
Train them with the best coaching and medical support.
Align with national missions like Khelo India and NCOE (National Centre of Excellence).
Prepare medal contenders for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games and beyond.
Most importantly, this school will normalise and prioritise para-sports—proving that these games aren’t “separate” but central to India’s sporting narrative.
Over the past few years, para-athletes from Bihar have shown grit and determination. They’ve represented India at the Khelo India Para Games, National Para Championships, and Para Athletics Nationals. Events like powerlifting, swimming, athletics, and badminton have seen remarkable contributions from differently-abled champions from the state.
“Bihar has always been a land of potential. With the right investment in infrastructure, coaching and inclusion, we can turn our para-athletes into national heroes,”
— Raveendran Sankaran, IPS, DG-cum-CEO, Bihar State Sports Authority
This institution is more than brick and mortar. It’s a launchpad for dreams. A promise that talent won’t go unnoticed because of disability, and a commitment that para-sports will be celebrated just like any other discipline.
It’s not just Bihar rising—it’s India becoming more inclusive, one game at a time.
