Bihar’s Broken Bridge Is Finally Getting Fixed — Will It Reconnect More Than Just Roads?

After years of delay, the Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat Bridge is back in action

It once symbolised hope. Then it became a reminder of failure. Now, the Sultanganj–Aguwani Ghat bridge, after long delays and a partial collapse, is finally being rebuilt. And this time, there’s a deadline: 18 months.

The broken section between Pier 9 and Pier 13 had shaken public trust. Now, under the direct orders of the High Court, reconstruction has resumed — not just with urgency, but also with improved design, revised engineering, and clear accountability.

Court Orders, Government Moves — And A New Push for Progress

The Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Ltd. (BSBCCL) is handling the repair of the collapsed portion. It’s not just patchwork — the entire stretch is undergoing a structural rethink.

As part of the first phase, the roadway (approach path) is being built immediately. This is to ensure that traffic movement can restart as soon as possible.

Mihir Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Road Construction Department, confirmed that a series of engineering changes are also underway. For instance, composite girders are being fabricated as per fresh blueprints in an approved workshop.

Additionally, experts from IIT Roorkee are offering technical consultation for modifications in the superstructure. Based on their recommendations, reinforcement in the foundation is already in progress.

The bridge connects Sultanganj in Bhagalpur to Aguwani Ghat in Khagaria. For thousands of commuters, farmers, and traders, this route means shorter travel time, reduced costs, and direct access to markets.

For the past year, the collapsed section forced people to take longer, costlier detours. Not to mention, it became a symbol of what goes wrong when public infrastructure fails.

But now, with the bridge work resuming and timelines declared upfront, a sense of faith is returning. If completed on schedule, it can restore much more than just connectivity — it can rebuild trust in Bihar’s governance and project execution.
