Patna’s Bazar Samiti Is Set to Turn Waste Into Energy – Here’s How

A Market Known for Mess Is Now Leading Bihar’s Green Revolution

If you’ve ever passed through Patna’s Bazar Samiti, you’ve seen the piles of rotting vegetables, fruit peels, and organic waste. The smell, the mess, and the chaos have always been considered part of the place. But that’s about to change.

In a significant step towards smart, sustainable cities, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) will set up a biogas plant right within the Bazar Samiti campus. Backed by the Union Ministry of Urban Development and Housing and funded under GIZ’s MAF programme, this project aims to turn what we throw away into something powerful.

Why This Project Matters

Patna is one of just four cities in India — alongside Bengaluru, Varanasi, and Trichy — chosen for this forward-thinking initiative under Waste Solutions for a Circular Economy in India.

According to Animesh Kumar Parashar, PMC Commissioner, the plant will handle 5,000 kilograms of organic waste every day. In turn, it will produce 250 kilograms of biogas and 500 kilograms of organic fertiliser, right at the market itself.

This on-site processing will stop the daily transport of waste to Bairiya dumping yard. As a result, the city will save money, reduce emissions, and ease pressure on landfills.

What Changes for You and the City

Once this plant becomes operational, the market will feel different. You’ll notice fewer piles of waste, cleaner corners, and a sharp drop in the foul smell that once defined the area.

The biogas generated can power local operations, while the fertiliser can go directly to farmers — creating a sustainable loop that benefits everyone.

Because waste will no longer travel across the city, fuel consumption will drop. Streets around Bahadurpur will face less garbage traffic, and residents will see noticeable improvements in sanitation.

Patna Could Lead by Example

The plant’s Detailed Project Report is in progress, but the groundwork has already begun. Once the model shows results in Patna, it could inspire other municipalities to adopt similar systems.

This isn’t just a technical solution. It’s a cultural shift in how we look at waste — not as trash, but as a resource waiting to be tapped.
