From Muzaffarpur to the World: Bihar’s Shahi Litchi Gets a 90-Day Global Lifeline
What if a fruit that once survived just 4 days could now stay fresh for 90? Yes, Bihar’s iconic Shahi Litchi is ready to travel across continents, thanks to a breakthrough from Madagascar.
A Global Leap with a Local Heart
Every summer, the juicy sweetness of Shahi Litchi fills the air of Bihar. But until now, it had a short shelf life—barely four days post-harvest. Due to this, exports remained confined to nearby nations like Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. But everything is about to change.
Using Madagascar’s advanced cold-seal packaging technique, Bihar’s Shahi Litchi will now remain fresh for a stunning 90 days. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has teamed up with Madagascar experts to make this a reality.
Why This Matters: Farmers, Exporters & Bihar’s Image
The new method involves drying the fruit, sealing it air-tight, and storing it in special cold chambers. Microbial preservation and sulfur dioxide treatment ensure that the fruit remains unspoiled and ready for consumption. Moisture and air? Eliminated.
This shift unlocks massive opportunities:
The Tech Behind the Taste
Madagascar’s preservation technique is a game changer. It dries the fruit delicately, seals it, and removes moisture completely. Once packed and frozen, the litchis are nearly immune to spoilage.
Furthermore, based on quality, the Shahi Litchi will be sorted and supplied accordingly:
For long-distance exports, cargo flights will be used. For domestic distribution, a mix of trucks, trains, and cold-chain logistics will serve cities like Lucknow, Delhi, Mumbai, Assam, Kerala, and Hyderabad.
From Bihar to the World’s Fruit Bowls
Currently, Bihar cultivates litchi on 30,000 to 34,000 hectares. In 2024 alone, the state produced 322,000 metric tons of the fruit. Muzaffarpur leads this revolution, with over 12,000 hectares under litchi cultivation.
At the recent International Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet held in Bihar, global interest in Shahi Litchi soared. Industry Minister Nitish Mishra confirmed that the initiative aims to significantly extend shelf life and global reach.
So next time you relish a Shahi Litchi in Tokyo, Dubai, or New York, know that it began its journey in the sun-soaked orchards of Bihar.
