Bihar’s Bold Green Step: 5 Crore Trees, 1 Mission

Can you imagine a Bihar where every breath feels fresher, each street corner shelters under leafy guardians, and children grow up surrounded by native trees? That vision is sprouting into reality. The Government of Bihar has kickstarted “पौधरोपण अभियान 2025,” an ambitious mission to plant 5 crore saplings statewide by mid-June.

From Mahogany to Mahua: 66 Tree Species to Transform the State

This initiative goes beyond numbers. It aims to revive ecological balance and build climate resilience. The campaign includes 66 carefully selected tree species, such as:

• Mahogany, Mahua, Jackfruit

• Peepal, Neem, Sheesham

• Kusum, Kanak Champa, Teak

These trees promise more than just greenery. They boost biodiversity, purify the air, and support rural livelihoods. As a result, Bihar will grow stronger roots—both literally and environmentally.

Deadline Nears: District Plans Due by 15 June

To keep the mission on track, Additional Chief Secretary Harjot Kaur Bamhrah directed District Magistrates to submit district-wise plantation plans by 15 June. These plans must clearly mention:

• Total number of trees

• Exact plantation sites

• Responsible nursery sources

Furthermore, every district must organize coordination meetings to monitor progress. Timely planning will ensure smooth execution without delays.

Bhagalpur Sets the Bar: 1.30 Crore Saplings

Some districts have already taken the lead. Bhagalpur plans to plant 1.30 crore saplings on its own. Other major contributors include:

• Gaya – 22.11 lakh

• Banka – 20.57 lakh

• East Champaran – 20.17 lakh

• Tirhut – 19.84 lakh

• Madhubani – 19.38 lakh

Clearly, Bihar is mobilizing every corner of the state for this massive green mission.

Everyone Joins In: From Jeevika Didis to Schoolchildren

Importantly, this isn’t just a government project—it’s a people’s movement. The campaign invites participation from:

• Jeevika Didis (rural women’s self-help groups)

• Local farmers and nursery owners

• NGOs and paramilitary forces

• Students and teachers in schools and colleges

To ensure higher survival rates, only saplings taller than 3 feet will be used. Each site will also directly coordinate with nurseries, making supply and tracking much more efficient.

268 Nurseries Ready Across Bihar

Currently, 268 nurseries—both government-run and community-based—stand ready to supply the saplings. These nurseries offer species suited to different regions, based on soil and climate conditions.

Because of this, each planted tree gets a better chance to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the ecosystem.
