What if we told you that an engine crafted in the heart of Bihar will soon roar through the landscapes of Africa? That’s not a dream—it’s happening right now in Madhura, Saran.
The WLPL Madhura Locomotive Plant, a collaborative venture between Wabtec Corporation (USA) and the Indian Railways, is scripting history. This advanced locomotive factory is all set to export 4500 HP diesel engines to the African nation of Guinea. The first batch will roll out by end of June 2025, powering Guinea’s Simandou Project, a major mining and rail development effort.
This is more than just a trade deal—it’s Bihar stepping onto the global manufacturing stage.
Located on 270 acres of land with a 70-acre production facility, this factory was launched on 17th September 2018. In less than seven years, it has transformed into India’s most advanced diesel locomotive manufacturing plant.
With over 600 skilled engineers and technicians, it has already delivered 700 engines to Indian Railways, and the momentum is only growing. These engines are known not just for their power, but for their eco-friendly performance, meeting international emission standards.
But this Africa-bound shipment changes everything—it signals Make in Bihar going truly Global.
The Government of Guinea has placed an order for 100 locomotives. According to Bihar’s Industry Minister Nitish Mishra, this is a major leap forward for India-Africa cooperation. The engines will be used to transport iron ore across Guinea’s rugged terrain.
The first batch will be dispatched by June end, but before that, a grand naming ceremony is scheduled for 26th May at the plant. It’s a moment loaded with pride, anticipation, and global visibility.
Recently, Sandeep Selot, MD (South and Southeast Asia) of Wabtec Corporation, met with Minister Mishra to discuss this high-impact project.
Despite this historic achievement, locals in Madhura feel an emotional pinch.
Engines built here often carry the names of cities like Gandhidham (Gujarat), Roza (U.P.), or Putti (Andhra Pradesh). The people of Madhura want to see their town’s name etched onto the very engines they build.
Local leaders including MLA Jitendra Kumar Rai and several farmer groups have formally requested the Ministry to name the new Guinea-bound engines after Madhura. The naming ceremony on 26th May could finally give them that long-overdue recognition.
Because after all, if an engine is made in Madhura, why shouldn’t the world know?
This story is not just about engines—it’s about employment, innovation, and global trust in Bihar’s industrial capacity. It highlights how a once-quiet town can become the hub of international trade, thanks to vision, skill, and strategic partnerships.
It’s also about the image transformation of Bihar—from being tagged as “backward” to being known for engineering excellence.
