Begusarai’s Traffic Nightmare is About to End — And It’s Happening on a Dam!
Imagine a drive through Begusarai without honking horns, bumper-to-bumper jams, or hours wasted in traffic. Sounds like a dream? Not anymore. A transformative move by the district administration promises to turn this into reality.
A 35-kilometer long bypass road is now in the pipeline — running parallel to the overloaded State Highway 55 (SH-55) — and it’s not just any route. It will be constructed on the Budhi Gandak Dam, offering a smart, sustainable solution to the city’s ever-growing traffic chaos.
Why the Bypass on Budhi Gandak Dam Matters
This new bypass will stretch from Fafaut to Siuri in Manjhaul, running alongside SH-55 — a highway infamous for its daily gridlocks. For years, both residents and local leaders have urged for a solution. Finally, with proactive steps by Begusarai DM Tushar Singla, that long-standing demand is getting addressed.
But there’s more than just traffic relief. Paving this dam-side route not only improves connectivity but also strengthens the Budhi Gandak embankment, enhancing flood safety and disaster preparedness.
Where We Stand Now: Phase-1 Complete, Phase-2 in Proposal
Progress is already underway. The first phase, covering Rosera to Fafaut, has been blacktopped and operational. Now, Phase-2 — Fafaut to Siuri — is on the table. The district administration has formally proposed the blacktopping work to the Water Resources Department’s Principal Secretary, emphasizing its dual benefits: easier transport and a stronger embankment.
A Boon for Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers & Emergency Services
SH-55 sees heavy daily traffic, especially from Begusarai to Rosera and Manjhaul. This new bypass will divert smaller vehicles — like two-wheelers, autos, cycles, and light cargo — off the main highway, easing congestion significantly.
Moreover, this stretch could become a vital lifeline for ambulances and emergency vehicles, ensuring faster response times in crises. For local traders and school buses too, it’s a much-needed relief.

Rooted in Local Voices, Driven by Public Demand
The blacktopping of the Budhi Gandak Dam path wasn’t born overnight. Local social activists, traders, and elected representatives have long raised this issue. They’ve highlighted how this road won’t just make travel easier but will also safeguard the dam structure from erosion and neglect.
Now, with administrative wheels turning, the project is closer than ever to reality.
