Bihar’s Sky is the Limit! ₹190 Crore Boost to Transform 7 Airports Under UDAN Scheme
Imagine boarding a flight from Purnia or Valmikinagar and reaching your destination in minutes. What once seemed out of reach is now taking shape. Under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, the Central Government has approved ₹190 crore for the development of seven airports in Bihar, giving a much-needed boost to the state’s air connectivity and regional development.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has allocated funds for airport development in the following cities:
Bairpur
Saharsa
Munger
Muzaffarpur
Valmikinagar
Madhubani
Purnia
Each of these airports will handle smaller aircraft with a seating capacity of up to 20 passengers. While ₹25 crore has been earmarked for six of these locations, Purnia Airport stands out with a higher allocation of ₹40 crore. This initiative will make air travel more accessible and affordable for people across Bihar.
This development gained momentum following the consistent efforts of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. In September 2024, he held a meeting with the Chief Secretary and representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). He followed it up by inspecting the new terminal at Patna Airport and the Bihta Civil Enclave in March 2025. His clear directives and leadership ensured that the state government extended full cooperation toward enhancing Bihar’s aviation infrastructure.

Valmikinagar is home to Bihar’s only Tiger Reserve, which has seen a rise in tourist footfall in recent years. With the upcoming airport development, travel to this eco-tourism hotspot will become faster and far more convenient. As a result, local businesses are expected to thrive, and tourist numbers may significantly increase.
Launched by the central government, the UDAN scheme is designed to connect small towns and rural areas with the national aviation network. Its objectives include:
Making air travel affordable for the common citizen
Saving time and reducing the strain of long-distance travel
Promoting local industries, tourism, and trade
Enhancing disaster relief efforts through quicker access
Creating new job opportunities and supporting economic inclusion
With airport development extending into remote and underserved regions, the initiative is not only about transportation—it is also about transforming lives and unlocking potential.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will oversee the development of these regional airports. The Bihar government has committed to signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AAI to facilitate the smooth execution of all upcoming aviation projects. This partnership reflects a strong model of coordination between the state and central governments.
By connecting regions like Saharsa, Madhubani, and Munger, Bihar is taking a significant step toward inclusivity and balanced development. Improved air connectivity will:
Boost regional trade
Attract investment
Enhance disaster response
Encourage tourism
Reduce travel time
Improve quality of life in rural and semi-urban areas
This move is more than a policy—it’s a promise of opportunity and progress for all corners of the state.
Bihar is taking confident steps toward becoming a better-connected, better-served, and better-prepared state.
