Bihar’s Fish Farming Boom: How One City Became the State’s Biggest Supplier!
Gone are the days when this city depended on imports to meet its fish demand. Today, it stands as Bihar’s powerhouse of fish production, supplying fresh produce across the state. How did this transformation happen? Let’s dive in!
Just a few years ago, local markets relied heavily on Andhra Pradesh for fish. But now, the tables have turned. With a staggering 41,000 metric tons of fish production, the city not only meets its own demand but also supplies neighboring districts. The local consumption stands at 39,250 metric tons, proving the region’s growing dominance in the industry.
This rapid progress is no accident. Government schemes and financial aid have played a significant role. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, fish farmers receive up to 60% subsidy, encouraging more people to enter the business. Additionally, youth are increasingly taking interest, driving innovation and scaling up production.
With fish farming proving profitable, pond numbers have surged from 3,152 to over 3,600. The Fisheries Department actively trains farmers and supports them in optimizing smaller water bodies for higher yield. Currently, more than 3,700 individuals are engaged in fish farming, including 2,000 private pond owners and 1,552 government-supported ponds.
A remarkable aspect of this growth is the rise of Jeevika Didis—local women entrepreneurs venturing into fish farming. They have received professional training from the fisheries department, enabling them to run profitable businesses. Starting from a small village, their success has now spread across the region. Even Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and MicroSave have extended their support, providing financial aid and business mentorship.
With continuous expansion and government support, this city is well on its way to becoming North Bihar’s largest fish hub in the next two to three years. As more entrepreneurs and investors enter the sector, production is expected to rise even further.
