Khushboo Kumari from Pandoul block, Madhubani, has created history. Along with her teammates Payal Preeti and Nikhat, she led Bihar to victory in the Women’s Triples Lawn Bowls event, defeating West Bengal 16-14 and securing a prestigious gold medal. This win is monumental, as Bihar has claimed gold in this competition after 25 years. The triumph has made the entire state proud, placing Madhubani on the national sports map.
Khushboo hails from a modest background. Her father, Ram Jatan Yadav, is a farmer, while her mother, Asha Devi, works as an ASHA worker. Despite financial struggles, she pursued her education at KGBV Pandoul, completing her studies up to the eighth grade before dedicating herself to sports. Her passion for Lawn Bowls started nine years ago, and with relentless dedication, she has now earned a name at the national level.
According to Kasturba School’s warden, Avantika Rani, Khushboo was always determined and disciplined. She completed her eighth grade in 2014-15 and remained in touch, often calling to share her journey. She consistently excelled in various sports competitions, including Karate, where she won multiple medals. Her unwavering spirit and commitment were evident from a young age.
Previously, Khushboo had secured a bronze medal in the Women’s Fours event at the National Lawn Bowls Championship held in Delhi. Additionally, she won gold in the Women’s Pairs event at the 2020 Khelo India Youth Games. Her journey is a testament to hard work and perseverance.
Expressing her gratitude, Khushboo thanked the Bihar Bowling Association, Bihar State Sports Authority, and her coaches for their support. She also acknowledged the encouragement from her community and well-wishers. In a phone interview, she mentioned that she was confident of victory but was overwhelmed by the emotional moment.
Her success is not just personal but a beacon of hope for aspiring female athletes in Bihar. The state’s sports infrastructure is evolving, and this win will undoubtedly inspire the next generation.
The people of Madhubani are ecstatic, preparing a grand welcome for their golden girl. DEO Javed Alam, DPO SSA Shubham Kusaudhan, and other officials have recognized her journey, highlighting how KGBV played a role in nurturing her talent. This victory is expected to create awareness about Lawn Bowls in Bihar and motivate young players.
Khushboo is set to return from Uttarakhand and is expected to reach Madhubani soon. There are talks of her meeting Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, to celebrate her historic achievement. Additionally, numerous sponsorship offers have started pouring in, indicating a bright future ahead. However, for now, Khushboo wishes to spend time with her family, mentors, and supporters who stood by her through thick and thin.
