Bihar is set to take a giant leap in its energy sector! The state government has approved a massive 2400 MW thermal power plant in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur, which will revolutionize electricity production in the region. This ambitious project, with an estimated cost of ₹20,000 crore, aims to meet Bihar’s rising energy demands and fuel its industrial growth.
Bihar has been making remarkable strides in power generation. The new Pirpainti Thermal Power Plant will be the second in Bhagalpur, following the NTPC Kahalgaon Plant (2300 MW). Since power shortages have affected industries and households, this project is a game-changer. By 2030, it will generate electricity, ensuring uninterrupted supply for Bihar’s growing infrastructure.
With increasing industrialization and rising power demands, this plant will be a key driver of Bihar’s economic development. Thousands of skilled and unskilled workers, including engineers and technicians, will find employment opportunities during and after construction. Moreover, local businesses will thrive, as improved power supply attracts investors, startups, and manufacturing units to Bihar.
While thermal power plants bring prosperity, they also raise environmental concerns. However, the Bihar government has assured that strict pollution control measures will be implemented. Additionally, green initiatives, including tree plantations and modern emission control technologies, will minimize environmental impact.
A crucial aspect of this project is coal availability. To ensure uninterrupted fuel supply, the government has secured Rajmahal Coal Block in Jharkhand. Starting in 2029, this block will produce 60 million metric tons of coal, out of which 12 million metric tons will be allocated to the Pirpainti plant. Thus, consistent coal supply will be maintained.
Exciting news! PM Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone on February 24 during his Bhagalpur visit. This inauguration will mark a historic step in Bihar’s energy sector. As a result, the project will gain national attention and momentum.
