The Bihar dairy sector is all set to witness a revolutionary change as the foundation stone for the state-of-the-art milk processing plant, with a daily capacity of 1 lakh liters, has been laid in Gopalganj. The ambitious project is supported by the Bihar State Milk Cooperative Federation Ltd. (COMFED) and funded by SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India). This is expected to enhance the livelihoods of dairy farmers, cooperatives, FPOs, and micro-units across the Saran division.
Empowering Bihar’s Rural Backbone
Dairy farming has always been the backbone of rural Bihar and this upcoming project is nothing short of a boon for the region. This ₹53.64-crore project will add to the enhancement of milk production and processing capabilities along with creating more than 2,000 job opportunities. This will benefit the small-scale farmer milking a single cow as much as the cooperative society managing large-scale operations.
The project must integrate core features.
- Capacity: Provision of processing capacity of 1 lakh liters milk per day to improve market access.
- Area: The plant, at 10.81 acres, will be one of the largest in the state.
- Building Scale: A modern infrastructure of 71,997 square meters, strategically located at ITI Bhawan, Bhorey Block, Gopalganj.
- Timeline: To be completed within 18 months by June 2026.
- Sustainability: Using advanced processing techniques to minimize wastes and improve the quality of products.
SIDBI’s Vital Role
This project exemplifies SIDBI’s commitment to driving growth and development in under-served regions. Through infrastructure funding, SIDBI has partnered with the Bihar government to create long-term, sustainable opportunities for rural communities. This initiative underscores the critical role that public-private partnerships play in accelerating economic progress.
Catalyst of Economic Development
This dairy plant will have a ripple effect on the local economy. The farmers will no longer have to grapple with logistical challenges in selling their milk. The availability of organized processing and distribution systems will boost incomes while encouraging more households to take up dairy farming. The ripple effect extends to micro-units and self-help groups engaged in manufacturing dairy products, allowing them to scale operations.
This will further enhance the milk and milk-based product supply chain in this well-entrenched state of Bihar. The upgradation of processing facilities will now mean opening of value-added product streams such as cheese, yogurt, and paneer that open new avenues for revenue generation within the dairy ecosystem.
