Scientists at Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, recently identified a unique medicinal compound in Makhana called N-(2-iodophenyl) methane sulfonamide. This breakthrough positions Makhana as a key player in the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries, further boosting its economic potential.

Adding to this scientific achievement, the state has been hosting events like the Makhana Mahotsav, which was recently held in Bengaluru. This initiative, supported by Bihar’s Deputy CM, aims to expand Makhana’s market beyond its home state. The festival not only showcases Makhana-based culinary delights but also fosters collaborations between farmers, scientists, and traders.

The event highlighted Makhana’s benefits, including its antioxidant properties and therapeutic applications, captivating audiences in Karnataka and beyond​ home front, Bihar’s government has been actively supporting Makhana cultivation under the “One District One Product” scheme in districts like Darbhanga and Supaul.

The Mahotsav has led to increased farmer incomes and better market access, making this industry a lifeline for rural communities  as a crunchy snack or a pharmaceutical ingredient, Makhana is redefining Bihar’s agricultural legacy.

From being served in local markets to reaching gourmet food festivals, its versatility is unmatched. With farmers receiving financial and technical assistance, and festivals expanding its popularity, Makhana stands as a testament to Bihar’s potential in revolutionizing agri-business.
