Bihar’s Big Power Push: Adani Power to Build 2,400 MW Thermal Plant in Bhagalpur

Bihar is gearing up for a historic leap in its energy sector. Adani Power Ltd has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd (BSPGCL) to establish a 2,400 MW greenfield ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur district. This project will not only supply electricity but also create jobs, boost industries, and power Bihar’s future growth.

A 25-Year Deal to Light Up Bihar

The LoA confirms a 25-year electricity supply agreement between Adani Power and BSPGCL. Both North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (SBPDCL) will benefit from the project.

The plant will have three 800 MW units, designed with ultra-supercritical technology to deliver efficient and reliable electricity.

“With our Pirpainti project in Bihar, we are setting new benchmarks in efficiency and sustainability. This plant will bring affordable and uninterrupted power to the people of Bihar, driving industrialization and prosperity,” said S.B. Khyalia, CEO of Adani Power.

A $3 Billion Investment and Thousands of Jobs

Adani Power plans to invest nearly $3 billion in the plant and related infrastructure. This makes it one of the largest private energy investments in Bihar.

The project will create 10,000–12,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction. Once the plant begins operations, it will continue to employ over 3,000 people, providing stable employment for local communities.

Why Bihar Needs This Energy Boost

India’s electricity demand is rising rapidly. From the current 250 GW, peak demand is projected to touch 400 GW by 2031-32 and exceed 700 GW by 2047. Bihar requires a strong and consistent power supply to support industries, cities, and villages alike.

Although renewable energy is growing, thermal power still ensures round-the-clock reliability. It remains the backbone of India’s energy security, offering crucial base-load and grid balancing support. To meet demand, the government plans to add 100 GW of new thermal capacity by 2035. The Pirpainti project positions Bihar as a central part of this growth strategy.

Adani Power currently operates 18,110 MW of installed thermal capacity across 12 plants in India. It has repeatedly shown its ability to deliver large-scale, dependable power.

In BSPGCL’s competitive bidding, Adani Power won by offering the lowest tariff of ₹6.075 per kWh. With its proven expertise, the company is set to play a defining role in Bihar’s development journey.
