“Jahan bhakti ho gehri, wahan chamatkaar bhi zaroori hai!”
That’s exactly what Samkuda village, in Patna’s Masaurhi block, witnessed on the first Monday of Sawan. A sea of devotees gathered around a 32-foot statue of Lord Shiva, their eyes filled with faith and hearts full of hope. The energy was electrifying. Conch shells echoed, incense wafted through the air, and chants of “Har Har Mahadev” rang out from every corner.
The artist behind this divine marvel, Sanjeev Kumar, didn’t plan to make headlines. A native of Samastipur and a student at Patna Art College, Sanjeev got stranded in Samkuda during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Rather than sit idle, he picked up his tools and followed his heart. He started with the idea of a small statue. But as time passed and faith deepened, the sculpture grew — eventually reaching 32 feet in height.
“People travel from far-off districts just to get a glimpse. Many say their wishes come true here,” Sanjeev shares, his tone humble yet proud.
This towering Mahadev now draws both devotees and tourists. It’s not just a statue. It’s a symbol of resilience, faith, and Bihar’s deep-rooted spiritual strength.
Samkuda’s spiritual story began back in 1992, when locals placed a small Shivling beside Shri Ram Vatika.
According to Vinod Baba, the head priest, that humble beginning sparked a movement. As more villagers started visiting, the demand grew for a larger idol. “This is the only Shiva statue of this size in the entire district,” Vinod says. “On Mondays and Purnima, the crowd becomes unstoppable.”
After completing the statue, locals held a Pran Pratishtha ceremony to invite divine presence into the idol. Since then, the site has become a weekly destination for Rudrabhishek and spiritual gatherings.
Visitors come not only from Patna but also from Jehanabad, Nawada, Ara, Gaya, and Hajipur. Every Monday, they arrive with offerings, prayers, and deep devotion.
Right beside the massive Shiva stands an equally grand statue of Nandi Maharaj, Lord Shiva’s loyal mount.
There’s a beautiful belief rooted in this village — if you whisper your deepest wish into Nandi’s ears, it goes straight to Mahadev. And the people believe it works.
That sacred whisper has now become a ritual. People queue patiently, not just for darshan, but also for a quiet moment with Nandi. This unique tradition adds to the temple’s charm and pulls in even more spiritual seekers.
