Yes, you read that right—Patna is all set to generate 15 megawatts of electricity using municipal waste. Backed by a whopping ₹513 crore investment, this bold initiative aims to transform garbage into green power—right from the heart of Bihar.
At the Bihar Renewable Energy Expo 2025, Urban Development & Housing Minister Jibesh Kumar Mishra announced a landmark project. Using waste from 11 urban local bodies, this Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative will generate clean energy, while also producing ethanol and compost-based fertilizer.
Even better? The Central Government has already released 33% of the required funding. The rest will be mobilized through private investment, ensuring faster implementation without solely relying on state funds.
This waste-to-energy plant doesn’t stop at just electricity. Leftover material will be repurposed as landfill material, reducing pollution and promoting circular waste usage.
According to Rahul Kumar, MD of North Bihar Power Distribution Company and Director of BREDA, Bihar will need 18,000 MW of electricity by 2034–35. That’s a steep rise from the 11,000 MW currently under power purchase agreements—of which 65% comes from thermal power.
To meet future demands, Bihar must rapidly expand its renewable energy sources, and this waste-to-energy project is a strong step in the right direction.
While cities evolve through sustainable power, rural Bihar is also gearing up for progress. Forest Director Abhishek Kumar shared that the government is bringing a dedicated Cold Storage Policy. With Cabinet approval underway, the plan will promote the installation of cold storage units in every block, especially within market committees.
To boost agricultural resilience, the new policy will focus on:
Setting up low-cost, low-capacity cold storages
Encouraging public-private collaborations
Reviving traditional market committees with cold storage facilities
This isn’t just about electricity. It’s about:
Reducing urban waste
Creating local employment
Cutting dependency on coal
Powering sustainable futures
Helping farmers store perishables longer and fetch better prices
Patna’s model could become a national benchmark for combining urban waste management with renewable energy. And with rising power demands, Bihar can’t afford to ignore such smart, scalable solutions.
