# Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary: Bihar’s Next Big Tiger Reserve, 4X Bigger Than Valmiki
Bihar is set to witness a game-changing transformation in its wildlife conservation efforts! Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary is on its way to becoming Bihar’s second Tiger Reserve, a title currently held only by Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR). The most striking part? It will be four times bigger than VTR, making it one of the largest tiger habitats in the region.
The Central Government has initiated the process to officially designate Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary as a Tiger Reserve. Starting in May 2025, authorities will relocate tigers from other reserves across India to Kaimur, ensuring a thriving population.
Currently, VTR houses 54 tigers, but Kaimur’s vast expanse will allow the population to grow significantly. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has developed strategic guidelines to protect and monitor these tigers effectively.
To ensure maximum conservation, the government will designate Kaimur as an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ). Once implemented, the 10 km buffer zone will prevent industrial projects, preserving the sanctuary’s natural ecosystem.
Officials have marked 450 sq. km as the core zone, where human activities will be strictly prohibited. The buffer zone, spanning 1050 sq. km, will include Shergarh Fort, ancient temples, and historic villages, making it a significant eco-tourism hub.
Kaimur’s location plays a crucial role in tiger conservation! It connects with tiger reserves in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand, forming a 300-km wildlife corridor. This link enhances tiger movement, reduces habitat isolation, and strengthens conservation efforts.
This corridor will help maintain a healthy and diverse tiger population in the region.
Tigers have roamed Kaimur’s forests since 2017. In 2019, wildlife experts discovered tiger footprints and scat samples. Further confirmation came in 2020, when camera traps captured tigers moving through the sanctuary.
These findings accelerated conservation efforts, pushing authorities to take action.
Tigers often stray from Valmiki Tiger Reserve, leading to human-wildlife conflicts. Now, wildlife officials will rescue these tigers and relocate them to Kaimur’s secure habitat, reducing such incidents.
The Bihar government has ramped up efforts to finalize Kaimur’s Tiger Reserve status. Officials will submit the proposal to declare it an Eco-Sensitive Zone to the Central Government by March 20, 2025. Once approved, tiger relocation and conservation programs will proceed without delay.
