Purnea Airport’s Highway Boost: How NH-31 Connectivity Could Change North Bihar’s Growth Story
When a Highway Meets a Runway, a Region Takes Off
What happens when a highway meets an airport?
In Purnea, it signals momentum, mobility, and a powerful push toward regional growth.
On December 11, 2025, the Bihar administration took a decisive step.
It initiated the process to link Purnea Airport with National Highway-31.
As a result, connectivity in North Bihar could soon change forever.
The move gained clarity after a high-level review meeting.
District Magistrate Anshul Kumar chaired the session.
Moreover, officials from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) joined the discussion.
Why NH-31 Connectivity Matters for Purnea
NH-31 serves as a vital economic corridor.
Therefore, linking it directly to Purnea Airport strengthens regional access.
At present, airport connectivity limits travel efficiency.
However, the new road link could reduce delays significantly.
In addition, it may boost tourism, trade, and emergency mobility.
Most importantly, North Bihar gains smoother access to national air routes.
Consequently, businesses and investors may look at Purnea differently.
Committee Formed to Drive the DPR Process
To ensure structured execution, the administration formed a multi-departmental committee.
This committee will oversee surveys, planning, and coordination.
The Executive Engineer, Purnea Road Division, received clear instructions.
He must submit a detailed survey report for the proposed link road.
Meanwhile, the committee will monitor progress at every stage.
Committee Members Include
-
Sub-Divisional Officer (Sadar)
-
Executive Engineer, Road Division
-
Municipal Commissioner, Purnea
-
Chief Security Officer, Purnea Airport
-
Circle Officer, K Nagar
-
District Land Acquisition Officer
Together, they will streamline approvals and execution.
Land Acquisition and Defence Coordination
The project requires 15.99 acres of land.
This land will support the airport’s approach lighting system.
Therefore, the DM directed officials to compile all acquisition data quickly.
However, final action depends on Ministry of Defence approval.
In addition, coordination with Chunapur Air Force Station is mandatory.
The administration will engage directly with the Station Commander.
This step ensures both civilian and defence safety protocols align.
Firefighting and Aviation Safety Measures
Safety remained a key focus during the meeting.
Hence, the DM issued firm instructions to the District Fire Officer.
Firefighting staff must be deployed at the Air Force airport when required.
If shortages arise, local replacements must step in immediately.
Furthermore, AAI will fund specialised training for fire personnel.
Drivers of fire vehicles will also receive local training.
This process will happen in coordination with the District Transport Officer.
Medical and Emergency Preparedness at the Airport
Medical readiness received equal priority.
Accordingly, the Civil Surgeon of Purnea received specific directions.
Medical officers, paramedical staff, and ambulances will remain available.
This applies to both Chunapur Airport and the interim terminal building.
Additionally, officials will maintain a clear duty roster.
This step ensures accountability and round-the-clock emergency care.
Wildlife Control and Civil Defence Support
Bird and animal movement near runways poses serious risks.
Therefore, Civil Defence volunteers will manage wildlife control.
The SDO (Sadar) and Deputy Controller of Civil Defence received instructions.
They must release one month’s honorarium to the volunteers promptly.
Meanwhile, the Director of the interim terminal must ensure funds flow on time.
This coordination reduces operational risks significantly.
What This Means for North Bihar
This initiative goes beyond road construction.
Instead, it reflects Bihar’s evolving infrastructure mindset.
Better airport access means faster movement.
Moreover, it strengthens disaster response capacity.
At the same time, it unlocks economic and tourism opportunities.
For Purnea, this link could redefine its regional importance.
