This Dussehra, Patna is set to surprise its people with a stunning electric water metro — a game-changer for travel on the Ganga.
Patna’s Ganga riverfront is entering a new chapter. The sleek electric vessel MV-Gomdhar Kunwar has finally arrived in the city, bringing the long-awaited water metro service closer than ever.
The project is a joint effort between the Bihar Tourism Department and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). Built in Kolkata by Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited at a cost of nearly ₹12 crore, this ship reflects India’s growing capability in modern water transport.
The water metro will start by running between Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat, covering a stretch of 6.5 km. In addition, plans include extending the service to Gandhi Ghat, which would make the route 9.5 km long.
With 50 cushioned seats and standing space for 25 passengers, the air-conditioned boat promises both comfort and safety. Moreover, large glass windows will allow travelers to capture breathtaking views of the Ganga while seated indoors.
This ship is more than just a vessel. In fact, it offers a unique river cruise experience.
Four air-conditioners ensure comfort even in hot weather.
CCTV cameras, LCD screens, and sound systems provide safety and real-time updates.
Wide glass panels let passengers enjoy uninterrupted river views.
Therefore, every ride will feel like a scenic journey rather than a daily commute.
The MV-Gomdhar Kunwar also marks a move toward sustainable urban mobility. Since it runs on batteries, the impact on the river’s ecosystem remains minimal.
The batteries charge within half an hour and power the ship for about 90 minutes. Charging points are already installed at Gaighat and Digha jetties.
Equally important, the fare will remain affordable. Authorities expect it to range between ₹20 and ₹30 per kilometer per person, making it accessible to both daily commuters and tourists.
The ship began its journey from Kolkata on September 9 and reached Patna on September 27. Strong winds and high water levels delayed its arrival. However, it safely reached Gaighat port, where IWAI officials Arvind Kumar and Amit Kumar welcomed it.
Now, final technical checks are underway. Once cleared, the ship will be handed over to the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) for operation. Most likely, its official launch will happen during Dussehra.
Imagine sitting inside a cool, air-conditioned hall with glass windows all around, while the mighty Ganga flows beside you. That is the experience Patna’s new water metro promises.
This is not just about transport. Instead, it is about reclaiming the river as a space for both travel and tourism. With this step, Bihar is adding a new dimension to its urban lifestyle while also inviting the world to see the state differently.
