Bihar’s First Mushroom Village – A New Chapter in Farming

What if farming in Bihar could change lives overnight? That is exactly what Nalanda is preparing for. The district administration has launched an ambitious project to turn Bind block into Bihar’s first-ever Mushroom Village. This move aims not only to modernize agriculture but also to transform farmers’ income opportunities in the state.

Affordable Mushroom Kits for Farmers

The Horticulture Department has rolled out a plan to distribute 18,000 button mushroom kits and 11,500 all-star mushroom kits in Nalanda this year. The best part is the subsidy. A button mushroom kit that usually costs ₹90 will now be available for just ₹9. Similarly, the ₹75 all-star kit can be purchased at only ₹7.50.

Moreover, 25% of these kits will be given directly to farmers in Bind block. As a result, mushroom farming will soon become a signature identity of the area. Importantly, the training certificate requirement has been removed this year, so more farmers can join without hesitation.

Awareness and Training at Ground Level

To ensure success, local horticulture officers will actively connect with farmers and raise awareness about mushroom cultivation. Farmers will also be sent to other states to learn advanced production techniques. Each farmer will be eligible to receive between 20 and 100 mushroom kits, depending on their interest and capacity.

Beyond Mushrooms – Dragon Fruit and Pearls

This project does not stop at mushrooms. The administration is also pushing for crop diversification. Dragon fruit farming is being promoted in blocks like Nagarnausa, Asthawan, and Noorsarai. Interestingly, this fruit requires less water and offers grants up to ₹3 lakh per hectare.

Additionally, pearl farming is set to receive a boost. The department has started identifying suitable sites and farmers for this unique initiative. Together, these steps are expected to raise farmers’ income and create new opportunities for agri-based industries in Nalanda.
