From Scrap Metal in Patna to a ₹17,000 Crore Empire – The Untold Journey of Anil Agarwal

Dreams don’t always need a degree. Sometimes they need courage. Anil Agarwal’s life proves this truth.

Born in Patna in 1954, he faced many failures early on. Yet, he turned struggles into stepping stones and built a global company. Today, he is Bihar’s richest man in 2025, with a fortune of nearly ₹17,000 crore.

Early Struggles and First Steps into Business

In the 1970s, Agarwal chose business over higher studies. While friends went to college, he worked with his father. Soon, he started trading scrap metal.

In 1976, he bought Shamsher Sterling Corporation. For years, success seemed distant. He failed in nine ventures, but he kept moving forward.

By 1986, he founded Sterlite Industries, which created India’s first private copper smelter in 1993. This marked the beginning of his rise.

Founding Vedanta Resources and Global Expansion

The 1990s changed his journey forever. He acquired Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) and Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO). These bold steps gave him control over key industries in India.

In 2003, he founded Vedanta Resources in London. It became the first Indian company listed on the London Stock Exchange. This achievement transformed his small scrap business into a global empire.

Later, in 2019, Agarwal took Vedanta private again. As a result, he gained more control over its diverse assets. Today, the group operates in zinc, copper, aluminium, silver, oil, gas, iron ore, and power.

Vedanta Resources and India’s Growth Story

Although based in London, Agarwal never lost touch with India. Vedanta invested heavily in the nation’s future.

In fact, a joint venture with Foxconn worth $20 billion aims to build semiconductor and display units in Gujarat. Moreover, Vedanta continues to strengthen its presence in mining and energy.

Even when faced with setbacks, such as disputes over Zambian copper mines, Agarwal refused to step back. Instead, he rebuilt with resilience. His persistence mirrors the spirit of Bihar—fall, rise, and rise stronger.

Philanthropy and the Vedanta Foundation

Wealth never made Agarwal forget society. In 1992, he launched the Vedanta Foundation. The foundation focuses on healthcare, education, and rural growth.

Inspired by Bill Gates, Agarwal pledged to donate 75% of his wealth to charity. This shows that his vision goes beyond profits.

Today, his net worth is estimated at ₹16,000–₹17,000 crore (about $2.01 billion). Alongside this, he enjoys luxuries such as Mercedes and Range Rover cars. Still, he remains committed to giving back.

Why Anil Agarwal Inspires Bihar’s Entrepreneurs

Anil Agarwal’s journey is not just about money. It is about determination. It is about learning from failures and never stopping.

From Patna’s lanes to London’s markets, his rise shows what Bihar’s spirit can achieve. He proved that even without a degree or capital, one can dream—and build an empire.
