Bihar Lights Up: Free Rooftop Solar Panels for 58.89 Lakh Families

Patna, August 16, 2025 – Imagine a Bihar where every low-income home runs on clean, free energy from the sun. That dream is turning into reality, as the state government launches one of India’s largest green energy missions—free rooftop solar panels for 58.89 lakh Kutir Jyoti (BPL) households.

A Landmark Step Toward Green Energy

The Bihar government has taken a bold leap to make renewable energy a household reality. Under this initiative, every Kutir Jyoti family will receive a 1.1 KW rooftop solar panel—absolutely free.

Energy Department Secretary and BSPHCL CMD Manoj Kumar Singh explained that the government has designed the scheme under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. The central government will contribute ₹33,000, while the state will provide ₹27,000, covering the full cost of each installation.

The project’s total budget stands at ₹16,000 crore. The state plans to meet this target within two years by using existing subsidy allocations, ensuring no extra financial burden.

Extending Support Beyond BPL Families

The scheme is not just for Kutir Jyoti consumers. The state will also provide financial assistance to 1.30 crore domestic consumers who wish to install solar panels. This wider support ensures more households shift from traditional electricity to renewable power.

According to Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Bihar aims to cut dependence on conventional power sources and accelerate renewable adoption. The goal is clear: reduce bills, boost sustainability, and empower citizens with clean energy.

A Vision Backed by Leadership

During a virtual outreach, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reaffirmed the state’s commitment to solar energy. He reminded citizens that all government buildings already run on solar power.

The current plan takes inspiration from the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Mission, under which more than 12,000 government installations in Bihar have been equipped with solar plants. Building on that momentum, the government now wants to install panels across all domestic buildings within three years.
