Bihar’s Sky Dreams Take Flight: Purnia Airport to Launch This Month!

Who said Bihar can’t fly?
A state once considered backward is now ready to rewrite its journey in the skies. As Purnia welcomes its brand-new airport this August, Bihar’s map of aspirations just got wings.

Purnia Joins the Sky Network

Until now, only three cities—Patna, Gaya, and Darbhanga—had functioning airports. With the launch of Purnia Airport, Bihar now expands to four operational airports, giving a major boost to air connectivity in North-East Bihar.

This move marks not just a geographical addition—but a cultural and economic upgrade.

Passenger Growth: From Thousands to Millions

Two decades ago, barely 2.47 lakh people flew from Bihar in a year.
Today, over 57 lakh passengers take flights—a 2209% increase!

This jaw-dropping growth has made Bihar one of India’s fastest-growing aviation hubs. The Centre and the Airports Authority of India are now more than optimistic—they’re investing.

UDAN Scheme Powering Connectivity

Thanks to the UDAN scheme, the dream of affordable air travel is reaching Bihar’s smaller districts too. The goal? Regional access without breaking pockets.

With improved air links, districts once seen as remote are now potential investment zones and tourist magnets.

The Ambitious Target: 2 Crore Flyers by 2027

Bihar has signed multiple MoUs with the Airports Authority of India. The mission is to reach 2 crore air passengers in the next 2 years.

But this isn’t just paperwork. Six new airports are being planned across:

  • Madhubani

  • Birpur (Supaul)

  • Munger

  • Valmikinagar

  • Muzaffarpur

  • Saharsa

₹150 crore has already been sanctioned for Phase 1 construction.

Economy Set to Take Off with the Flights

According to Mihir Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Industries Department, “Stronger air connectivity will directly strengthen Bihar’s economy.”

And he’s right.

  • Bhagalpur’s Jardalu mango

  • Hajipur’s Chinia banana

  • Mithila’s Makhana

  • Nalanda’s Magahi Paan

  • Maner’s Laddoo

  • Champaran’s Murcha Chura

These products are already famous across India. With airports in place, global markets are next.

Not Just Roads & Rails—Now Runways

Under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Bihar saw massive road and rail expansions. But now, the aerial phase of growth is here. With nearly a dozen airports projected by 2027, Bihar is all set to lead India’s regional air travel movement.

This is more than infrastructure.
This is aspiration in motion.
