When Rivers Answer the Call of the Fields: Bihar’s Ganga Water Revolution
Imagine a parched land where hopes of harvest flicker with every dry gust. Now picture that same land revived—green, nourished, and full of promise. That’s the vision Bihar is turning into reality.
In a historic move, the government has decided to extend the reach of Ganga water beyond households—to the farms of South Bihar. The first drops of this transformation will soon irrigate the soil of districts like Nalanda, Gaya, and Nawada.
From Drinking to Drip: Ganga Water to Fuel Irrigation
Until now, surplus water from the Ganga River was primarily used for drinking water schemes. But with irrigation capacity in several regions dropping by up to 80%, the state has acted decisively.
Santosh Kumar Mall, Principal Secretary of Bihar’s Water Resources Department, announced that Ganga’s surplus monsoon water will now travel through pipelines to reach even the long-thirsty Belhar-based Badua reservoir in Banka district.
Why This Matters: Fighting Drought with Vision
Many water bodies, even during monsoon, remain underfilled. The Badua reservoir, for instance, has seen its capacity drop significantly due to erratic rainfall. By redirecting Ganga water, not only will this reservoir fill, but the surrounding areas will benefit from expanded irrigation facilities.
This initiative is part of the broader Jal Jeevan Hariyali Abhiyan, which emphasizes smart water use, conservation, and climate resilience.
Not Just Irrigation: Drinking Water Projects on the Horizon
The transformation doesn’t stop at agriculture. Plans are underway to supply treated surface water from the Son River to cities like Aurangabad, Dehri, and Sasaram. Additionally, Kaimur’s Bhabhua and Mohania towns will soon receive water from the Durgawati reservoir.
As per officials, several other dormant reservoirs like Morve, Jalkot, Bascot, and Garhi will also be recharged using Ganga water, ensuring a steady and sustainable water table.
A Call for Collective Responsibility
Chief Engineer Awadhesh Kumar emphasized that true prosperity depends on the coexistence of life and greenery. Climate change has made water conservation more urgent than ever. Under this mission, ponds across the state are being cleared of encroachments and restored to store rainwater and boost groundwater levels.
This isn’t just an infrastructure project—it’s a moral mission. Every pipeline laid is a promise to the farmers, every drop saved is a step towards Bihar’s sustainable future.
