Apple Grows in Bihar Heat! Farmer Lalit Kumar Turns 44°C into a Sweet Success Story!
“They said apples need snow. I proved they can bloom in Bihar.”
That’s not a movie dialogue—it’s the real voice of change from Lalit Kumar, a farmer from Masaurhi, Patna. In a state better known for rice, wheat, and lentils, Lalit is defying climate norms and rewriting Bihar’s farming narrative. And yes, we’re talking about real, juicy apples—ripening in a place where summer temperatures soar to 44°C!
Lalit Kumar isn’t new to farming. For over two decades, he has nurtured plants across 12 bighas of land. But recently, he planted something revolutionary—apple trees. Not in Himachal or Kashmir, but right here in Bihar. With just 10 plants of the ‘Hariman 99’ and ‘Golden’ varieties, Lalit has managed to get sweet, market-ready fruit.
And no, this isn’t a one-off experiment. It’s a taste of the future.
“People laughed when I said I’d grow apples. Now they’re tasting them,” says Lalit with pride.
The story began when Lalit brought apple saplings from Hariman, Himachal Pradesh. These were not ordinary varieties. ‘Hariman 99’ and ‘Golden’ are specially developed for warm climates. What’s more surprising? These apples don’t just survive—they thrive at 44°C, a temperature that would make regular varieties wilt.
With his deep-rooted love for horticulture, Lalit gave these plants everything they needed—soil care, consistent watering, and patience. Today, the same red fruits that define Shimla are now adding a new colour to Bihar’s soil.
While many still think apple farming needs cold weather, Lalit believes it’s time to break that myth.
“We’ve always believed apples can’t grow here. But the truth is, right variety + right care = right results,” he explains.
These apples are not just growing—they’re bearing fruit with remarkable taste and quality. With rising demand for local produce, Lalit sees no reason why Bihar apples can’t sell at ₹200/kg just like their Himachal cousins.
What’s exciting? Lalit’s apples are already market-ready. No transportation cost from the hills. No long storage. Just fresh, sweet apples grown right here—ready to be sold locally or across India.
This isn’t just about farming. It’s a quiet agricultural revolution in a state that’s ready to innovate.
Lalit Kumar’s success shows what happens when tradition meets innovation. In a time when farmers across India are struggling, Bihar has a new hope growing—literally—in its soil. This is more than a story. It’s a signal to every farmer who’s ever been told “you can’t.”
Because now, even apples bow down to Bihar’s resilience.
