6 new Day Care Centers are launching across Bihar—Read how this changes everything for cancer patients!
Cancer patients in Bihar have long battled not just the disease but also the distance. Until now, access to proper care meant traveling to cities like Patna, Delhi, or Mumbai. But here’s the good news—that’s changing fast. The state government, with support from the Central Government of India, is bringing cancer care closer to home.
Six more Cancer Day Care Centers are being launched in Begusarai, Samastipur, Motihari, Siwan, Bhojpur, and Kishanganj. These are in addition to the 11 already functioning in places like Patna, Gaya, and Bhagalpur.
These centers are designed to provide free OPD consultations, screenings, and chemotherapy medicines—a massive relief for underprivileged families.
Here’s what a patient can expect at these centers:
Quick OPD services
On-spot screening for lumps or symptoms
Access to a specialized Tumor Board for diagnosis and treatment roadmap
Free chemotherapy drugs
Palliative OPD services for advanced cases
With this initiative, cancer treatment is becoming not only accessible but also dignified for many who couldn’t afford the travel or cost earlier.
Most cancers, if detected early, are treatable. These day care centers will focus heavily on early detection through regular screening, especially in rural and semi-urban populations.
This development will:
Reduce treatment delays
Lower the patient burden on Mahavir Cancer Sansthan and other tertiary hospitals
Increase awareness at the grassroots level
Out of the approved 17 cancer day care centers in Bihar, 11 are already functional. These include: Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Nalanda, Madhubani, Chhapra, Purnia, Siwan, Bettiah, and Darbhanga.
Now, 6 new centers are being added, and the remaining 21 districts are also expected to see such facilities in the near future.
According to Dr. (Major) K.N. Sahay, State Program Officer at Homi Bhabha Cancer Research Centre:
“We’ve made strong progress. With 17 centers sanctioned and 11 already operational, Bihar is now on the path to full cancer care coverage.”
This initiative falls under the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Programme and aligns with the nationwide goal of launching 200 such centers across India.
Until now, patients from smaller districts had no choice but to spend thousands traveling to metros. With these local facilities, patients can now receive high-quality care close to their homes, without the logistical and financial strain.
