Bihar to Bangladesh: A Ticking Seismic Time Bomb – IIT Kanpur Expert Warns of Impending Earthquake!

Bihar to Bangladesh: A Looming Earthquake Threat You Can’t Ignore!

The earth beneath us is shifting, and scientists are sounding the alarm. A renowned seismologist from IIT Kanpur, Professor Javen N Malik, has issued a stark warning: the region stretching from Bihar to Bangladesh is at high risk of a devastating earthquake. His insights come in the wake of the catastrophic tremors in Myanmar, Bangkok, and Tonga, raising concerns about a potential seismic disaster closer to home.

Historical Evidence: A Precursor to Future Disasters?

Professor Malik highlighted that the delta regions of the Ganga and Brahmaputra Rivers experienced a massive earthquake back in 2000. The remnants of that disaster are still visible today. Back then, Professor Nakata from Hiroshima University identified the earthquake’s epicenter, prompting IIT Kanpur’s research team to investigate further. Their findings suggest that Bihar, West Bengal, and Bangladesh remain vulnerable to future tremors.

“The cracks in the surface and deep fault lines indicate a history of strong earthquakes in this region. Our studies suggest that such a seismic event could strike again,” said Professor Malik.

How Powerful Could the Next Earthquake Be?

Seismologists estimate that past earthquakes in the Ganga-Brahmaputra region reached magnitudes of up to 7.0 on the Richter scale. While the exact intensity of a future quake remains uncertain, Malik warns that strong tremors are likely in the coming years. The IIT Kanpur team is preparing to submit its findings to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, reinforcing the need for urgent preparedness.

“The previous earthquakes in this belt show that the tremors can be as powerful as 7.0 or slightly lower. However, no one can rule out the possibility of another high-magnitude quake in the near future,” he added.

What Can Be Done?

With millions of people living in Bihar, West Bengal, and Bangladesh, the consequences of a major earthquake could be catastrophic. Governments, urban planners, and disaster management teams must take proactive steps to reinforce infrastructure, improve early warning systems, and educate communities about safety measures.

The question isn’t if another earthquake will strike—it’s when. Stay informed, stay prepared.
