Big Win for Bihar! Smart Prepaid Meter Users to Get Cheaper Electricity from April 1

Are you a smart prepaid meter user in Bihar? If yes, here’s some fantastic news! The Bihar State Electricity Regulatory Commission (BSERC) has announced new electricity rates effective from April 1, 2025. This means you will enjoy cheaper electricity bills and additional benefits.

Lower Electricity Rates for Smart Prepaid Meter Users

The new tariff brings significant relief for prepaid meter consumers. Specifically:

  • You will save 25 paise per unit if you use a smart prepaid meter.
  • Rural consumers will benefit from a 54 paise per unit discount.
  • For six months after installation, there will be no penalty for exceeding load.

If you live in a rural area and have installed a smart prepaid meter, you can enjoy a total benefit of 79 paise per unit on your electricity consumption.

Relief for Rural & Industrial Consumers

The new tariff benefits extend beyond just prepaid users. Additionally:

  • Rural consumers using over 50 units per month will now pay 54 paise less per unit.
  • The government rejected a proposed electricity tariff hike for industrial consumers, ensuring stable rates.
  • Industrial users making digital payments will receive up to ₹50,000 in discounts.

Cold Storage & Agriculture Sector Gains

To support the agricultural sector, the Bihar government has introduced a separate category for cold storage facilities. Consequently, this ensures fair electricity rates for storing perishable agricultural produce.

  • Cold storages with a contract demand of up to 74 kW now fall under LT-IAS.
  • For HT cold storage (11 kV), a new category has been introduced for facilities ranging from 50 kVA to 1500 kVA.

Bihar’s Electricity Rates from April 1, 2025

Here’s a quick look at the revised electricity rates:

Consumer Category Rate Per Unit (₹)
Kutir Jyoti (0-50 units) 7.42
Rural (above 50 units) 7.42
Urban (1-100 units) 7.42
Above 100 units 8.95

With these changes, electricity will become more affordable across Bihar, benefiting millions of users.
