A Life Dedicated to Service and Knowledge

In the heart of Bihar, a luminary emerged whose life’s work continues to inspire generations. Acharya Kishore Kunal, a name synonymous with dedication and service, left an indelible mark on society. His journey from a humble village in Muzaffarpur to becoming a revered social worker and scholar is a testament to his unwavering commitment to humanity.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1950 in Baruraj village, Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, Kishore Kunal displayed exceptional academic brilliance from a young age. He completed his matriculation from his village high school, securing a prestigious scholarship—an achievement reserved for only a select few. Despite qualifying for engineering, he chose to pursue the arts at Patna College. In 1968, he secured the highest marks in Patna University, solidifying his academic excellence.

Distinguished Career in Public Service

In 1972, Kunal joined the Indian Police Service (IPS), serving with distinction across Gujarat, Bihar, and Jharkhand. His tenure was marked by integrity and dedication, leading to significant contributions in various capacities. Notably, he was appointed as the Officer on Special Duty (Ayodhya) by Prime Minister V. P. Singh. In this role, he mediated between conflicting parties during the Ayodhya dispute—a responsibility he continued under subsequent administrations.

Transition to Social Work and Philanthropy

After voluntarily retiring from the IPS in 2001, Kunal dedicated himself to social service. As the founder secretary of Patna’s Mahavir Mandir Trust, he established three charitable hospitals, offering affordable healthcare to the underprivileged. His efforts extended to empowering marginalized communities, including advocating for the employment of Dalit priests in Bihar temples.

Literary Contributions and Scholarly Works

Beyond his administrative and social contributions, Kunal was a prolific writer. He authored several books, delving deep into historical and religious subjects. His writings reflect a profound understanding and commitment to promoting knowledge, interfaith harmony, and social justice.

Honors and Legacy

In recognition of his monumental contributions, the Government of India posthumously awarded him the Padma Shri in 2025. This prestigious honor underscores his lifelong dedication to social work, public service, and education. His legacy continues to inspire, reminding us of the power of selfless dedication.
