Rajgir Sports Academy: Transforming Bihar into a Sporting Powerhouse
In a groundbreaking development for sports in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the state’s first-ever Sports Academy and Bihar Sports University at the International Sports Complex in Rajgir. Launched on National Sports Day, this state-of-the-art facility is poised to revolutionize the region’s athletic landscape, aiming to produce Olympic-level athletes by 2032.
A New Era in Sports Training
The sprawling International Sports Complex spans 90 acres and was built at an investment of ₹740 crore. With training facilities for 24 sports disciplines, the complex is designed to provide comprehensive amenities, including accommodation, training, and medical services all on one campus. This strategic approach ensures that athletes have everything they need to excel in their respective sports.
Facilities Designed for Success
The complex features a primary cricket stadium with a capacity of 50,000 spectators, along with eight smaller stadiums, each accommodating 10,000 fans. Beyond cricket, it supports athletics, football, hockey, volleyball, kabaddi, and more. Future plans include a cutting-edge hospital, fitness center, and advanced sports research facilities, further enhancing the environment for athletic growth.
Bihar Sports University: A Hub of Excellence
Established in July 2021, the Bihar Sports University (BSU) aims to promote sports education and research. It specializes in physical education, sports science, sports technology, management, and training. Situated within the International Sports Complex, BSU is set to become a vital hub for high-level research and training in the state.
The university is already gearing up for its operational launch, having sanctioned 81 permanent and 33 contractual positions, including directors, trainers, dieticians, and yoga instructors. An additional 31 positions were approved in July 2022 to ensure smooth functioning.
Key Appointments
Rajnikant, a 2011-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the registrar of the Bihar Sports Directorate and will serve as the acting vice chancellor of BSU until a permanent appointment is made. His tenure begins on September 1, 2024, marking a significant step toward the university’s operational success.
Comprehensive Training Opportunities
BSU aims to offer both residential and non-residential training focused on scientific methods suitable for international-level athletes. The facility boasts an athletics track, football stadium, hockey turf, and courts for basketball, volleyball, handball, lawn tennis, and badminton. Specialized facilities for wrestling, weightlifting, archery, and fencing are also available.
Sports hostels for men and women, a transit hostel, and accommodations for trainers are already completed, setting the stage for a robust training environment.
Celebrating Excellence in Sports
The inauguration event celebrated the achievements of nine international players from Bihar, who were honored with cash prizes. An exhibition match featuring the Indian women’s hockey team, recent Asian Games winners, was held on the newly constructed hockey turf, allowing local trainees from Eklavya centers to interact and train with national players.
A Vision for the Future
Officials in Bihar are optimistic about the impact of the Rajgir Sports Academy. They envision that by the 2032 Olympics, athletes from Bihar will not only participate but also win medals. This initiative marks the beginning of a new era in Bihar’s sports history, with a clear commitment to providing athletes with high-quality training and resources.
The Rajgir Sports Academy is not just a facility; it is a symbol of Bihar’s ambition to transform into a sporting superpower. With world-class infrastructure and a focus on nurturing talent, the academy stands as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes across the state. As we look forward to the upcoming Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, it is evident that this is only the beginning of an exciting journey for sports in Bihar.
