The historic Jamalpur Rail Engine Workshop, established in 1862 during British rule, is set to reclaim its former glory…

As Bihar prepares to embrace metro rail services, the proximity of the Jamalpur Workshop makes it a strategic choice for the construction and upkeep of metro coaches. Railway sources suggest that metro services are being planned in cities like Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Gaya, and Bhagalpur, with the goal of launching the first metro in Patna by 2025.

If all goes well, the maintenance of Patna Metro trains might also take place right here in Jamalpur.

Jamalpur Workshop: A Key Player in Bihar’s Metro Plans

In a significant development, the Railway Administration has now given the green light for the construction and maintenance of metro rail coaches at the Jamalpur Workshop. This decision is not only a testament to the workshop’s enduring legacy but also a crucial step towards self-reliance in Bihar. With metro services set to launch across the state, this move ensures that Bihar won’t have to look beyond its borders for the maintenance of these modern trains.

Boosting Self-Reliance with a Legacy of Expertise

The Railway Ministry has steadily increased the workload for this iconic workshop, recognizing its potential to continue serving as a vital part of India’s railway infrastructure. According to D. Datta, PRO of Eastern Railway, both metro and Vande Bharat trains use ICF (Integral Coach Factory) coaches, and Jamalpur Workshop is fully capable of constructing and maintaining them. This marks a new chapter for the workshop, aligning it with the future of India’s railways.

A High-Profile Visit That Speaks Volumes

On August 6th, P. Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager of Metro Rail, visited the Jamalpur Workshop for an inspection. Impressed by the facility, he noted that while the metro has its own workshops, the capabilities of Jamalpur make it an ideal candidate for metro and Vande Bharat train maintenance. With its long-standing expertise in handling ICF coaches, Jamalpur is more than equipped for the task, and this opens up exciting possibilities for Bihar.

Strengthening Bihar’s Industrial Capabilities

This decision not only strengthens Bihar’s industrial capabilities but also ignites a sense of pride among its people. The thought that the metro coaches zipping across the state might be built and maintained in Bihar’s own backyard is monumental. It is a proud moment for Bihar to know that the coaches running on those tracks have been meticulously crafted and maintained in the historic Jamalpur Workshop. This isn’t just about trains—it’s about reviving a legacy and empowering a state to take control of its future.

The Path to Reviving a Legacy

The Jamalpur Workshop, which has been a cornerstone of India’s railway heritage for over a century, is now on the path to playing a vital role in the nation’s modern railway projects. By taking on the task of building and maintaining metro and Vande Bharat trains, the workshop is helping Bihar position itself as a hub of industrial growth, engineering excellence, and transport innovation.

It’s an exciting time for the state, with metro projects on the horizon and the workshop ready to prove its mettle once again. The facility’s ability to handle these advanced projects opens up possibilities not only for metro rail systems but also for future transport innovations in Bihar and beyond.
