“Maize Miracle in Bihar! RPCAU Launches 3 Game-Changing Varieties for Farmers, Nutrition & Markets”
Bihar’s Maize Revolution Begins at Dholi
Bihar is sowing the seeds of an agricultural revolution — and it starts with three remarkable maize varieties tailored just for its land, climate, and people.
In a breakthrough for eastern India’s farming sector, Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (RPCAU) has unveiled three innovative maize hybrids that are set to reshape farming income, nutrition, and agri-business in Bihar.
These varieties—Rajendra Baby Corn-1, Rajendra Pop Corn-1, and Shaktiman-5—are not just new crops. They are tools of transformation for small and marginal farmers.
Rajendra Baby Corn-1: Quick Income, Dual Purpose
Developed by the maize breeding team at Tirhut College of Agriculture (TCA), Dholi, Rajendra Baby Corn-1 is Bihar’s first region-specific baby corn hybrid. It matures in just two months, giving farmers a fast turnaround crop with 12–15 quintals per hectare of fresh baby corn.
But there’s more—this hybrid also yields up to 300 quintals per hectare of green fodder, making it a dual-purpose boon for farmers with livestock.
“Baby corn has a strong demand in cities and food industries, but Bihar lacked a variety that fits our unique climate. This hybrid fills that gap,” said Ajay Kumar, maize scientist at RPCAU.
With rapid growth and urban demand, this variety is a clear win for farmers seeking both speed and sustainability.
Rajendra Pop Corn-1: From Fields to Packaged Snacks
Popcorn is no longer just a cinema treat—it’s a booming snack industry, and RPCAU wants Bihar’s farmers to get their slice of the pie.
Rajendra Pop Corn-1, specially tailored for Bihar’s agro-climatic zones, matures in just 80–90 days. It thrives in both Rabi and late Kharif seasons, delivering 30–40 quintals per hectare.
Its secret weapon? A popping ratio of 34–36 cc/g and 95% popping success, producing premium butterfly-type flakes loved by snack brands.
For farmers, this means not just yield, but market-ready quality.
Shaktiman-5: Feeding Futures with Biofortified Protein
More than a crop, Shaktiman-5 is a nutritional intervention. This biofortified Quality Protein Maize (QPM) is rich in lysine and tryptophan—two essential amino acids missing in most cereals.
Why does it matter? Because protein deficiency still affects large rural populations, especially children. Shaktiman-5 aligns with national goals like Poshan Abhiyaan, the National Biofortification Mission, and even strengthens food schemes like mid-day meals and anganwadi nutrition.
“This variety isn’t just for fields—it’s for kitchens, schools, and hospitals,” noted RPCAU Vice-Chancellor P.S. Pandey.
From better child development to improved livestock feed, this variety offers high returns with high impact.
Why It Matters for Bihar Farmers
