3.83 Lakh Farmers Empowered: Bihar’s Bold Leap in Agriculture Through Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan
A movement rooted in soil and driven by knowledge
“Gaon ki mitti mein hai taqat, bas zarurat hai sahi margdarshan ki.”
This saying now defines Bihar’s changing rural landscape. Through the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, over 3.83 lakh farmers have received direct support. More importantly, they’ve been equipped with knowledge that empowers decision-making on their farms.
Direct connection, not distant policy
Unlike many top-down schemes, this campaign has adopted a grassroots approach.
So far, 103 expert teams have visited farms, spoken to farmers, and provided practical advice based on ground realities. Instead of passively waiting for farmers to come forward, the teams have taken the initiative to reach them.
Dr. Anjani Kumar, Director of ICAR-ATARI Bihar-Jharkhand, leads this mission in Bihar. According to him, the strength of this campaign lies in door-to-door agricultural counseling, customized to local needs. This ensures that advice is immediate, relevant, and actionable.
KVKs become knowledge engines
To scale the effort, 43 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) have become the campaign’s local arms. These centers have hosted more than 37,000 training camps, transforming villages into learning spaces.
Farmers attending these camps are not only learning modern techniques, but also understanding how to access government schemes, crop insurance, and smart farming methods.
Dr. Anup Das, Director of ICAR – Research Complex for Eastern Region, explained that these camps allow technology and support systems to reach farmers without delays or red tape. That’s what makes the change sustainable.
National vision, Bihar’s leadership
Launched on May 29 from Odisha by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan was designed to uplift farming communities nationwide. Yet, Bihar has emerged as a standout example, proving that local institutions, when mobilized well, can drive big change.
As the campaign nears its conclusion on June 12, the results speak for themselves. Farmers are not just aware—they are confident and proactive.
Young people are returning to farming. Villages are exploring innovations. Most importantly, farming is being seen once again as a viable future, not just inherited compulsion.
The deeper shift: Respect, not relief
Although the statistics are remarkable, the real impact lies in the change of mindset. This campaign has helped farmers move from being recipients of help to owners of knowledge.
They now understand not only what to do but also why it matters. With every session and interaction, a new culture of curiosity, risk-taking, and self-reliance is taking root.
What’s next?
Bihar’s farmers have shown that with the right guidance and timely support, even the most under-resourced regions can turn around.
This campaign is not the end—it’s the foundation for a stronger, smarter farming future.
