Bihar’s Factories Have Doubled—A Quiet Industrial Comeback Is Taking Shape
Bihar is building again.
Slowly, steadily, and with renewed confidence.
For years, the state stayed away from India’s industrial spotlight. However, fresh data now tells a different story. Bihar is not standing still anymore. Instead, it is laying the foundation for long-term industrial growth.
According to the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) 2023–24, the number of registered factories in Bihar has doubled over the last 19 years. Clearly, this growth reflects a changing economic mindset. More importantly, it signals resilience, recovery, and rising ambition.
A Steady Rise That Signals Structural Change
In 2004–05, Bihar had 1,674 registered factories.
Gradually, the number increased.
By 2010–11, it reached 2,805 units.
Later, in 2018–19, it touched 3,422 factories.
Then came the pandemic. Like everywhere else, industries faced disruption. Even so, Bihar showed recovery strength. In 2022–23, factories stood at 3,307. Soon after, in 2023–24, the number rose to 3,386, recording a 2.4% annual growth.
Therefore, despite challenges, the growth curve remains upward. That itself speaks volumes.
Bihar’s Position Is Improving on the National Map
Across India, 2,60,061 factories operated in 2023–24. Within this landscape, Bihar’s presence is becoming more visible.
Notably, Bihar has moved ahead of Jharkhand (2,889) and Odisha (3,281) in factory count. This shift highlights consistent improvement. At the same time, it shows how eastern India’s industrial balance is evolving.
While larger states still lead, Bihar’s progress proves that industrial revival does not happen overnight. Instead, it grows layer by layer.
Regional Gains Reflect Growing Industrial Confidence
Surpassing neighbouring states marks a confidence boost.
Moreover, it reflects improving policy focus.
States like Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal currently have higher factory numbers. However, Bihar’s advantage lies in its emerging sectors and untapped potential. Therefore, the state stands at a promising inflection point.
With the right push, Bihar can convert momentum into scale.
Emerging Sectors Are Powering the Next Phase
According to Ram Lal Khetan, President of the Bihar Industries Association, eastern India is entering a new industrial phase. Bihar, in particular, holds strong promise.
Currently, sectors such as food processing, packaging, plastics, mineral-based industries, and apparel manufacturing are expanding steadily. Importantly, small and medium enterprises are leading this change.
Meanwhile, improvements in logistics, energy supply, land access, and skill development can accelerate this progress even further.
Factories, Jobs, and a New Economic Narrative
Every new factory adds more than numbers.
It creates jobs.
It boosts local supply chains.
It strengthens confidence.
Therefore, Bihar’s industrial rise is not just about rankings. Instead, it is about opportunity spreading across districts. With sustained reforms and investments, the state’s manufacturing ecosystem can scale faster.
The direction is clear. The foundation is visible. The momentum is real.
