From Breakfast Plates to National Charts: How Bihar Quietly Became India’s New Egg Powerhouse
For decades, Bihar was known mainly as a consumer of eggs.
However, that image has now changed—decisively and confidently.
In a major milestone, Bihar has entered India’s top 10 egg-producing states.
More importantly, this shift reflects grassroots growth, not overnight luck.
According to Animal Husbandry Statistics 2023–24 under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Bihar’s rise is both measurable and meaningful.
As a result, the state is no longer standing on the sidelines of India’s poultry economy.
To understand the scale, the numbers speak clearly.
In 2014–15, Bihar produced 9,845 lakh eggs.
By 2023–24, production surged to 34,401 lakh eggs.
That means Bihar tripled its output in less than a decade.
Meanwhile, this growth outpaced the national average.
Consequently, Bihar’s entry into the top 10 is not symbolic.
Instead, it signals structural transformation.
Traditionally dominant states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Maharashtra still lead.
However, Bihar’s inclusion proves the gap is narrowing.
Earlier, Bihar relied heavily on egg imports from other states.
Now, the state is steadily building its own supply strength.
As a result, farmers earn more locally.
At the same time, supply chains shorten and prices stabilize.
Moreover, nutrition access improves in both rural and urban homes.
Therefore, this growth touches livelihoods, health, and economic confidence together.
Simply put, Bihar is shifting from consumption to contribution.
Several factors worked together rather than in isolation.
First, poultry farming expanded rapidly in rural Bihar.
Small farmers adopted modern practices with lower entry costs.
Second, the Mukhyamantri Poultry Development Scheme played a key role.
Through this, the government offered subsidies, training, and financial support.
Additionally, structured training programs helped farmers improve productivity.
As a result, mortality rates reduced and output increased.
According to PK Agrawal, President, Bihar Chamber of Commerce & Industries, market linkage initiatives also strengthened farmer confidence.
Meanwhile, rising egg consumption across Bihar created steady demand.
Consequently, producers felt secure investing more.
Although growth remained steady, the real surge began post-2018.
In 2017–18, Bihar produced 12,185 lakh eggs.
However, in 2018–19, production jumped sharply to 17,633 lakh.
Then, momentum accelerated.
2019–20: 27,408 lakh
2020–21: 30,132 lakh
Since then, Bihar has maintained production above 30,000 lakh eggs for four consecutive years.
Therefore, this is no temporary spike.
Instead, it reflects sustained capacity.
While Bihar grows fast, national leaders remain ahead.
Andhra Pradesh: 2,54,874 lakh eggs
Tamil Nadu: 2,23,325 lakh eggs
West Bengal: 1,62,394 lakh eggs
Yet, Bihar’s growth rate stands out.
Unlike saturated markets, Bihar still has expansion room.
Moreover, affordable labor and favorable climate support future scaling.
Thus, Bihar’s poultry sector now attracts investors and entrepreneurs alike.
This egg story is not just about numbers.
It represents employment generation, especially for youth and women.
It also supports micro-entrepreneurs in villages.
Furthermore, poultry farming requires less land than traditional agriculture.
Therefore, marginal farmers find it accessible.
Step by step, Bihar is building a diversified rural economy.
And eggs are becoming an unexpected growth engine.
With consistent policy support, Bihar can climb higher.
Additionally, cold storage, feed supply, and logistics will matter next.
If addressed early, value-added processing could follow.
That would further strengthen incomes.
Most importantly, Bihar’s success shows what focused planning can achieve.
It proves that quiet sectors can deliver loud results.
This is just one of many transformations happening across the state.
