Bihar’s Big Road Safety Push: 285 Black Spots Identified, Most Already Fixed — A Mega Plan to Save Lives

When a state takes road safety as seriously as Bihar does today, change doesn’t just begin — it accelerates.

Bihar’s Mega Plan to Reduce Road Accidents

Road safety has become a top priority for the Bihar Government. As accident numbers started raising concern, authorities acted fast and launched a targeted mission to locate and fix every dangerous point on the road network. As a result, teams identified 285 Black Spots across the state in the last three years. They didn’t stop there. They fixed 227 locations, and work on the remaining ones is already underway.

Transportation officials shared an encouraging update. The Road Construction Department improved 93 out of 96 spots in 2022, 92 out of 96 in 2023, and 42 out of 93 in 2024. The remaining 58 spots will see complete correction by the end of this year. This pace signals the beginning of a safer Bihar, road by road.

National Highways: A Massive Improvement Drive

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also moved swiftly. They identified 260 Black Spots on highways based on standards of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. They improved all 260. Additionally, Bihar’s own standards helped detect 563 more Black Spots, and 547 locations already received safety upgrades. Only 16 Black Spots remain under improvement, and work continues with urgency.

These numbers show a focused and aggressive effort. The state wants to ensure that highways become safer for everyone — bus passengers, truck drivers, daily commuters, and long-distance travelers.

Rural Roads: No Black Spots, Only Six Grey Zones

Interestingly, the Rural Works Department did not identify any Black Spot on rural roads. Yet they detected six Grey Spots in Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Buxar, and Kaimur. Teams corrected all six and reopened them for public use. These quick actions reduced risks where villagers travel daily.

Black Spot vs Grey Spot: Understanding the Difference

A Black Spot is a road location where frequent accidents and deaths occur regularly. Tight curves, poor visibility, faulty design, potholes, or dark stretches often cause repeated crashes.

A Grey Spot indicates a place where severe injuries happen often, even if fatalities remain low. Both categories need attention. Bihar is now addressing both with equal seriousness.

Government’s Renewed Focus on Road Safety

Bihar’s Transport Minister, Shrawan Kumar, emphasised the government’s commitment. He said the state continues to correct every risky location and will soon fix the remaining ones. Authorities are also mapping new danger points. Once identified, they will improve them without delay.

His statement shows intent. More importantly, the progress shows action.

A Safer Bihar Is Taking Shape

The combined efforts of NHAI, the Road Construction Department, and the Rural Works Department reveal one clear message — Bihar is building safer roads for its people. This mission matters because each corrected Black Spot means one less danger zone and one more life potentially saved.
