“Sapne Bade, Mauke Bhi Bade!” — Why Bihar Must Help Women Break Free From Stereotyped Jobs

A New Wave of Voices in Patna

Patna woke up to a powerful message this week: Bihar’s women deserve careers beyond the narrow lanes of “stereotyped” work. At an ADRI panel discussion in the city on November 20, 2025, WCDC Managing Director Bandana Preyashi  strongly urged the state to act faster and smarter. Her words created a moment that hit both the mind and the heart.

She said women still get pushed toward the same old roles. Beauty work. Tailoring. Basic support jobs. However, their dreams now stretch far wider. Many want modern roles like computer operators, digital service providers, and office administrators. They want dignity, skill, and a future.

The Core Issue: Skills Are Missing, Not Aspirations

Preyashi explained the real problem. Women want to grow. The government wants them to dream big. Yet the skill gap blocks their journey. As a result, they cannot reach the jobs they truly want.
She framed it bluntly: “We haven’t been able to help women realise the very aspirations we ask them to seek.”

This gap restricts thousands of marginalised women who want dignified and better-paid work. And this is exactly where Bihar must step up with urgency.

New Research Reveals a Hidden Pattern

The event began with a joint research presentation by ADRI and the University of Reading (@UniofReading).
Dr. Ashmita Gupta (@ADRI_Official) highlighted an important pattern. She said aspirations in Bihar still depend heavily on gender, caste and exposure. Wages matter, but not as much as many assume. Because of limited awareness, people mainly hope for jobs they hear about often — especially uniformed roles or government posts.

This insight surprised many attendees, yet it also opened the door for deeper conversations.

Why Limited Exposure Shapes Dreams

Professor Kambhampati (@UniofReading) added a strong perspective. She explained that people can aspire only to what they understand. When women lack exposure, they cannot imagine possibilities beyond their neighbourhoods.

She described it simply:
“To aspire, you must first know what the ideal looks like and how to reach it.”

Therefore, expanding awareness becomes as important as giving training. Without both, Bihar will continue to see restricted ambitions, especially among women.

A Room Full of Changemakers

The panel also included Prem Prakash (NITI Aayog Bihar), Dr. Sunita Lall, and Dr. Ushasi Gupta. Academics, students, civil society members and policymakers filled the room. Because of their shared concern, the discussion grew energetic and solution-focused.

Everyone agreed that if Bihar wants a stronger labour market, it must close the ambition gap. It must also improve access to non-traditional work pathways. Most importantly, it must give women the skills and exposure that unlock modern careers.

The Bigger Picture for Bihar’s Future

This conversation signals something bigger. Bihar is rewriting its story every day. Women stand at the centre of that transformation. However, they still need a bridge — a bridge connecting dreams with opportunities.

When Bihar expands training, breaks stereotypes and celebrates modern careers, women rise. And when women rise, families rise. Entire communities rise. Ultimately, the state rises.
